Varsity Review 2019 Was a Great Showcase of CHS Talent BY NATHAN MACOMBER
Ah - Hoy, Maties! Varsity Revue, Oakers at Sea, was a few weeks ago. Each year, since I was a freshman to now as a senior, being apart of the backstage crew has been really special for me. It was so awesome to help with such a big event that our school holds and I got the best view of all the acts performing! Every year there is so much amazing talent and I hope that Varsity Revue continues to grow within our school.

Ah – Hoy, Maties!
There was a variety of talent featured this year. We had our very first Chinese Yo-yo act performed by sophomore, Isabell Creamer Ward. Her glow in the dark trick was pretty neat and the crowd went wild over her. We also had a magnificent solo dance performance by senior dance team member, Kaitlin Dupont.
Another favorite act was the band “Legends In The Making” (Drew Albanesa, Ben Brown, and Jackson Perry). Watching them perform during the advisory show and during both nights, I saw how much fun they had and how much the auditorium lit up the moment those curtains opened. I decided to ask the boys some questions on how their experience went.
Q : Overall how was it performing at Varsity Revue? Were there any emotions off stage that you felt?
Drew Albanesa (Guitarist & vocals) : “Performing at Varsity Revue was a once in a lifetime experience. The crowd was amazing, energy was great, and the stage crew was a huge help. After the show I felt great and thought everyone did a fantastic job.”
Q : Do you feel performing at Varsity Revue has helped the band grow closer together?
Jackson Perry (Guitarist) : “We all learned that we love playing music with each other and the experience drives us to want to do better things with music and just hang out more”.
Another act that blew away the audience was sophomore, Maddy Almeida, performing “Fix you” by Coldplay. Maddy is a powerhouse when she sings!
Some other outstanding singing acts were Sydni O’Brien, Meg Brietzke, Penny Bergeron, Max Riley & Aidan Lamont, and Alex Brock & Sarah Molinares. The crowd was singing along and you could feel the awesome vibes as everyone clapped and applauded their talent.
One singing performance that was definitely pretty deep was senior, Gabby Brzoza, singing… “Shallow” by Lady Gaga. She had a little help too from Aidan Lamont. Gabby’s voice is so powerful and the way she began her performance from the back of the auditorium and made her way on stage was very aesthetically pleasing!
I also did a mini interview with Gabby to hear her perspective on how this years show went for her.
Q : Why did you choose “Shallow” as your song?
Gabby : “Honestly, I just love vocally challenging songs. This song is powerful and emotional and really hard to sing. Also, the song fit in with this year’s theme of Oakers at Sea”.
Q : As someone who’s sang before at past Varsity Revues was this year different from previous years? If so, how?
Gabby : “Well not really. It’s always fun and everyone is so talented. It’s so nice to see what other people can do and to cheer them on. There definitely seemed to be more variety in the acts this year which was fantastic. I loved the dancing and the yo-yo’s. Last year was mostly singers”.
Q : Who personally was your favorite act this year?
Gabby : “Hmm, I loved them all, but if I were to pick one it is probably the rock band. It’s great to see a group of kids able to perform together and look and sound great. They put together a fantastic performance that everyone enjoyed”.
Our school is just full of amazing, talented people. Am I right!? Some other incredible performers were the CHS Jazz Ensemble, Select Chorus, Cheerleaders, and the Dance Team, choreographed by former Patriots cheerleader, Caitlyn Hart. And, Caitlyn’s sister, Lauren Hart, was the Emcee for the show, along with Vivianna Ruggieri. Those two were hilarious and the audience loved all their funny skits and pirate jokes.
Needless to say this years show was a fabulous success. It’s events like this that make me truly happy to be apart of such a great school. I hope you all enjoyed Varsity Revue as much as I did. I will always remember what a great show this year was. I’ll be in college next year… but I will surely be back to see next years talent.
