Embracing Perspective: Finding Beauty in the Ordinary and Extraordinary BY SAMANTHA MIGNANELLI
While I may not have firsthand experience with those challenges, I believe it’s important to foster empathy and understanding. Through participating in and engaging with organizations that support individuals with special needs, I have gained a deep appreciation for their tenacity and resilience. I am committed to using my good health to advocate for inclusivity and create a more compassionate society for all.
Countless memories were made, but one in particular will remain in the back of my mind for the rest of my life. Coventry High School’s 2022 Unified Basketball team was undefeated, and one of our players, Cameron, was blind and autistic. Though playing basketball was rather difficult for him, it never stopped Cam from maintaining a positive attitude and a huge smile. We worked on tactics where I would stand under the net and call his name, “Cameron over here!” while another partner would guide his arms to align with the net. This strategy would give Cam a sense of where to shoot the ball to score. During an assembly at school, Cam did just that! Our 2022 Unified team played against our Alumni team. Using the strategy we had been practicing, he shot the ball and scored on his first try! The entire gym filled with thunderous sounds of excitement. The joy on Cam’s face when he made the basket is an unforgettable memory.
Ironically, since I initially signed up to help them, I have discovered that the kids with special needs have helped me more as the emotional benefits of being a member of our Unified program at my high school are immense. The Unified movement goes beyond just physical activity and skill development. It promotes empathy and compassion, along with a greater perception of others’ unique perspectives. I have taken part in helping Unified students since I was in elementary school. Now that I have grown into a young adult, my participation and dedication to this specific community has grown as well. I have always had an easy time with communication and inclusion. I play Unified volleyball and basketball, I am a member of Coventry High School’s Unified Internship, and I play Unified cornhole through Special Olympics. Being involved in these sports is an incredible experience that allows kids with and without disabilities to come together as a team. It is a chance to build friendships, develop skills, and promote inclusivity both on and off the playing fields. Sports have the power to break down barriers and create a sense of belonging for everyone involved. Personally, I have grown very close with my teammates and have built unbreakable bonds with them.
As I reflect on my experiences, I feel incredibly grateful that I haven’t faced any significant hardships or drawbacks in my life. I believe I have approached my life with a positive and optimistic mindset. Without the weight of past traumas, I have been able to focus on personal growth, exploring my passions, and embracing new opportunities. I am very blessed to be in good health while recognizing the everyday challenges of a person who may have disabilities.
