Christmas season has officially begun, and one of the most universally loved parts is the music that comes along with it. We hear Christmas music everywhere, on the radio, in stores, and at home. These songs play a role in making the season so special and there is nothing like listening to Christmas music while curled up under a blanket and surrounded by glowing lights. But what makes these songs so popular?
There is a large variety of music that we hear at Christmas, and naturally different people prefer different types. There are many classics such as “Let It Snow,” “White Christmas,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and “Santa Baby.” While newer generations aren’t typically listening to songs from the 50s or 60s, these Christmas songs are an exception because they remain timeless. Part of this is probably due to the nostalgia attached to them. Many of us grew up hearing these songs every December every year. They are also very popular due to the many covers and versions by more modern artists. So many popular artists of our time have covered these classics and possibly introduced them to a brand-new audience. Ariana Grande’s cover of “Santa Baby” is one of the many modern spins on a classic song.
Possibly the universal favorite Christmas song is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” This song with its sweet lyrics and impressively high notes, is everywhere around Christmas time. Although it’s relatively new, only twenty-nine years old, having been released in 1994, it is considered one of the greatest Christmas songs. It combines the nostalgia and comfort found in the classics with a slightly newer twist found in more modern music.
Many of today’s artists have released Christmas singles or even full Christmas albums. Some current popular artists including Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and Ed Sheeran have all released Christmas music. These songs tend to have Christmas or winter themes but reflect the individual artist’s style, creating even more variety in the songs we hear. While these songs and artists are considered new and modern right now, they may become classics for future generations.
Whatever Christmas music you choose to listen to this season, I hope it makes you feel festive and happy. Merry Christmas!
