Check Out the Elephant’s Trunk BY Isabella Carlow

The Elephant's Trunk is a place where students can stop by and get free clothes and accessories. It was created last school year by Ms. Spaziano and Mrs. Cone as a way for students to get the clothes they need or want, no matter the reason. Ms. Spaziano added that, “We also both love thrifting and thought that the students would enjoy shopping!” It started out as clothing racks in the hallway and turned into a “ ‘boutique like’ thrift shop” in the new cafeteria.

Since hearing about it last year through the announcements, I’ve been curious about the Elephant’s Trunk and wanted to visit. When my friend asked me if I wanted to check it out sometime, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to write about it. I interviewed Ms. Spaziano, who talked about the details behind it, and also went to the closet with my friend.

Ms. Spaziano added that, “We also both love thrifting and thought that the students would enjoy shopping!” It started out as clothing racks in the hallway and turned into a “ ‘boutique like’ thrift shop” in the new cafeteria.

Before there was a designated space for the clothes and other items, Ms. Spaziano and Mrs. Cone had clothing out on racks between the two cafeterias 1-2 days of the week in the morning. Later on, they moved them to the library and let anyone access them anytime. Now that they have a space in the new cafeteria, the Elephant’s Trunk is still open 1-2 mornings a week before the morning bell, and will be open during all three lunch periods soon. If the closet isn’t open, you can contact Ms. Spaziano or Mrs. Cone to set up a time to go down and have them unlock it. You can take what you want, and grab a bag for your stuff if you need one.

The clothes for the Elephant’s Trunk are donated by students, staff, and other people in the community. There’s a mix of new and gently used clothes in there, as well as other things like shoes, jewelry, bags, and more, in a variety of sizes and styles. Clothes can be donated anytime to Mrs. Cone (Rm. 100) or Ms. Spaziano, and people from the community can donate items during school hours to the main office. You can also let them know if you’re in need of anything specific by filling out a google form.

I was really surprised at how many clothes were there- like I said, there’s a really good selection of stuff. Everything’s organized on racks, in bins, or on shelves, separated into different categories of items. My friend picked out a few pairs of earrings to take, and I found this really cute corduroy jacket. If you haven’t already been, you should definitely check it out! There’s something for everyone in there.
