Coventry High School has returned to its former glory in wrestling! At the Providence Career & Technical Academy on February 27th, Coventry claimed victory over wrestling like they had in the past. At one point, our wrestling team won seventeen years in a row, claiming dominance over Rhode Island. However, it would take twenty-four years before we could see ourselves win another trophy again. However, last month, it finally happened again. The team obtained 210 points, placing them 50 points higher than the 2nd place finishers.
I decided to sit down with a few of our new wrestling champs and asked them a few questions on their experience as a whole. Adam Vesey, a senior on the wrestling team, told me that everyone pretty much performed as expected, “since we were favorites to win divisions and states”, “everyone came through to make that possible”. He appreciated the grind, enjoying practices with the team, having fun while getting ready for competitions. “Matches were just electric” and he loved them everytime.
Mr.Vesey also said that this year was definitely one of the best teams he had ever been on. Another senior on the team, Robert Ciaramello reiterated Mr.Vesey. He said that this was a great year for him, placing in a state tournament, with his best record so far, and was able to go to New England’s. Mr.Ciaramello said that this was CHS’s best year since 1998, where they went undefeated. He closed the interview by saying that it was a phenomenal year and a phenomenal experience for not only himself but for his teammates too.
Seeing as both were seniors, I wanted to ask them what they would tell future generations of CHS wrestlers. Both had their own poetic insight. Mr. Vesey said to work hard at every practice but to also enjoy the matches. Mr. Ciaramello said to continue the new dynasty of Coventry Wrestling, especially after this phenomenal year that their team forged. What will come of CHS wrestling has yet to be seen as of the writing of this article, but I know that if the team continues to have the passion that I’ve seen expressed, I just know we’ll be in for many years to come. Seniors may not be able to see it, but knowing that we’ve come this far, I think that will carry them a lifetime.
