The Unified Oakers move into their busiest time of the year as we prepare for the annual polar plunge. The polar plunge is hosted by Special Olympics of Rhode Island as their main fundraiser of the year to support Special Olympics and Unified programs throughout the state of Rhode Island. Students throughout the state of Rhode Island raise money as a school team, competing with other schools, all culminating in a plunge into the freezing ocean during the month of March together as one unified group. This year's plunge is Saturday, March 19th at 11 am at Roger Wheeler Beach.

Students throughout the state of Rhode Island raise money as a school team, competing with other schools, all culminating in a plunge into the freezing ocean during the month of March together as one unified group. This year’s plunge is Saturday, March 19th at 11 am at Roger Wheeler Beach.
To participate in the polar plunge, a student must set up a fundraising page, using the provided link. There the student will provide information to join the Coventry High School Team. The student must raise a minimum of $50 to participate in the plunge. If the student struggles to raise the funds, please contact Mrs. Macomber as there are teacher donations and funds to cover all students so that everyone may attend. All the money raised by the school goes into a 50/50 split with Special Olympics and the Unified program of the school to fund next year’s unified program’s unified sports, social hours, and other events. A successful method of fundraising has been students, with permission, posting their page on a parent/guardian’s social media, or their own, for other friends, family, and community members to donate.
A change to this year’s plunge is they will not be accepting walk-on participants to sign up the day of due to COVID restrictions, unlike previous years. A student must be signed up online with the $50 and limited family members will be allowed to attend with the student, the fundraising page will be used as an attendance roster and will be strictly enforcing their limited attendance policy. Closer to the date of the plunge, further health and safety detail will be given out regarding a mask policy and the number of guests a participant may have.
Students will also have to provide their own transportation. However, be on the lookout for a survey that will be sent out regarding if students would like to attend but don’t have access to transportation. A bus may be arranged to and from the event from the high school if there is enough student interest.
To see the progress of our school fundraising efforts, Mr. Cotinoir and the woodshop department have made beautifully crafted wooden meters that are displayed in both cafeterias. A huge thank you for their support in our Unified program and polar plunge efforts.
Another huge thank you finally to the students, faculty, staff, parents, community members and so many more who help support our unified program throughout the year! We hope to see as many participants as we can on March 19th to see a sea of red running into the ocean.
