How CHS Students Can Stay Positive and Healthy during Lockdown

Hey Oaker Nation, are you feeling bored, stressed, or undermotivated during quarantine? Here are some tips for teens like us to make quarantine a little easier and to stay connected!
Students are facing challenges during this time and many are experiencing a lot of anxiety. To reduce or even eliminate anxiety Oakers should focus on what we need to accomplish and what we can control. A reminder to students is that we can not control what is going outside during this time of COVID-19, however, we have power over what we can do to reduce stress.
A good technique in the morning is to write a list of goals that need to be accomplished whether it is just completing homework, doing laundry, or doing a 3-mile hike. Setting goals or tasks to complete during the day keeps one focused on one task at a time and doesn’t give students time to sit and think about what is stressing them out. It keeps the brain stimulated and can give the satisfaction of being productive when a task is completed.
Another technique is getting up early in the morning to give the body enough time to wake up to start the day. Waking up early can eliminate negative and stressful thoughts. Also, students can wake up early to start schoolwork right away. Completing schoolwork early in the day reduces the amount of work that piles up throughout the week. When we finish our work earlier it gives us the rest of the day to do what we want. Also when school work is completed earlier in the day it starts the day off in a productive way which can create a more positive mindset.
If students are feeling stressed about COVID and what is going on, we shouldn’t bottle it up. Great ways to react to stress is to talk to friends, parents, or trusted adults. Chances are those people are also dealing with their own anxieties so it can be comforting to talk about stress with others and allow them to share so students can realize we aren’t alone. Other ways to react to stress is to do activities that bring joy and peace to our minds. Some examples are listening to music, exercising, yoga, and reading. Students shouldn’t feel like they have to deal with this stress by themselves and know that they are not alone.
Distance learning can be hard on some students to stay focused and motivated at home. Some ways to make it easier is to create a list of all the assignments that need to be completed that day. It creates organization and makes it easier to see all the things that need to be accomplished in a day. When completing schoolwork students should always remember to take breaks. A good system is to work for 45 minutes and then take a 5-10 minute break and repeat. This gives us time to relax in between school assignments and will make it easier to focus on work. Students should remember to reach out to teachers when we need help. All the teachers are working hard adapting to distance learning but are still offering extra help to the students that need it. So when we need extra support they should email their teacher explaining what is so difficult and teachers will provide the support.
Also, student-athletes of CHS at this time are suffering from a lot of boredom because we were used to having busy schedules. It can be harder to stay in shape for a particular sport. An easy answer is to exercise on our own like running and doing home workouts. However, the motivation to do so can be hard on student-athletes especially when they are used to the team environment. To make up for this loss of unity with a team, students can meet with a few friends or a few teammates and go on walks as long as we social distance. This can help students be motivated to stay in shape when they have a friend with them. Also for motivation purposes, students can create workout schedules together with a friend online. Having a friend participating in the schedule of workouts can provide support while also staying in shape for a sport or health reasons.
Lastly, students should limit the amount of news we watch. Staying glued to the news can cause stress that is not needed. Try to only watch what is essential like news regarding schools. Staying away from the news can limit anxiety and can create a more positive attitude which is essential to get through quarantine!
