The GSA Club at CHS: I Exist BY ELIZABETH O’BRIEN
For those unfamiliar with the GSA club, it is a club of students and advisors who are working to make a safe space for every student. This group meets during ACLAB every D day. It’s run by Mrs. Clunan, Mrs. Siemao, and Mr. Zannella. This group was made for ALL students of any orientation and or gender. Anyone who is questioning, gay, straight, lesbian, pansexual, nonbinary, genderfluid, bisexual, or anything else. People who are straight and or cis-gendered (Cis – identifies as the gender they were from birth) are welcome to come support, participate, and open the lines of communication between all. Everyone can find out about the LGBTQ+ community. Even people who just need a safe space or to get away from all their drama. The goal of GSA is to help include everyone and normalize more of the LGBTQ+ culture.
During the meetings, the students do a check-in, usually one positive and one negative thing from that week. The students can take their time speaking, speak a lot, speak a little, or pass on the question altogether. The students can comment on what the speaker said if the speaker is ok with taking comments. There are icebreakers to help get to know everyone there. There’s a different activity almost every meeting to keep it interesting along with little games and projects.
The GSA is a newly growing club that would love to take in new members! Everything said or talked about in GSA stays in GSA. The club has rules against discussing personal information about others in the club outside of the club. This club is a safe space for anyone and everyone in it.
You can contact Mrs. Clunan, Mrs. Siemao, or Mr. Zannella by email or making an appointment. You will receive a pass for ACLAB if you wish to go to GSA.
