Tips for Success at CHS
BY MAYA BOUCHARD
Every year millions of students graduate from high school all over the world, so succeeding in highschool is an achievable task. However, no one is just going to give you that diploma for free. Below you will find the Top Ten Tips for succeeding in high school.
If you are in school most of the time, pay attention, and participate, you will most likely understand what is happening in your classes be able to retain most of what you have learned. Although this seems like a pretty obvious tip, it is essential in order to succeed in school. Also, participating in class makes the time pass faster, so you won’t just be counting down the minutes until class is over.
Homework gives you a chance to practice what you have learned, and it often counts for a percentage of your overall grade. If you are practicing and earning credit, you won’t have to spend as much time cramming in study time for a test, and you won’t fall behind.
Some students use one binder for everything, other coordinate classes by color. Find a system that works for you and keep everything together. It is hard to study for that chem test if you lost your notebook. If you are unorganized by nature, ask an organized friend to help you out.
Try to come up with a schedule for schoolwork, your sports, your social life, your job, and other activities. This teaches you time-management and helps you avoid those painful all nights because you have procrastinated
Are you confused about a topic in one of your classes? Don’t just avoid the problem, see your teacher for extra help. Find someone to study with who can review it with you before the next quiz. If you’re seriously lost, try to find someone to tutor you. Do something before you start to get failing grades.
Sometimes social media, friends, Netflix, and other technology temptations are too much and can distract you. You know that schedule you made above, shut your phone off during homework time so you can focus and efficiently do your work.
If you know you have a quiz or test coming up, take some time reviewing homework, making Quizlets and studying those notes. If you are keeping up on a daily basis, a good study session before a quiz or test should be enough.
If you need to learn more about a topic or have a math topic that you do not understand, google it! If you are not sure how to site that newspaper article on your research paper, you can find that online too. Of course, you never want to plagiarize or use the internet to do your work, but the internet can certainly help you in so many ways,
Make sure you are eating well, getting 8 hours of sleep a night or more and living a healthy lifestyle. If you are not taking care of yourself, it is hard to be successful in any situation.
Make sure you are spending time with family and friends and be sure to ask for help if you are feeling anxious, overwhelmed or unwell. Everyone has to spend time doing something they enjoy, whether that be sports, clubs, or any other hobby. All work and no play is never good for anyone, so make sure you spend some time each week doing something you enjoy.
