All of these snow days may seem fun, but in the long run they are not working to our benefit.

Everyone knows that snow can be a beautiful yet troublesome thing. The hours of shoveling and missed school days can really make it seem like a burden, rather than a wonderful part of nature. Here at Coventry High School, we have already missed many days due to blizzards and extremely cold temperatures. Lately, we have seen surveys going out asking us whether or not we would rather have February vacation or get out later in the year. The real questions however, are whether these snow days will affect our learning, as well as our summer break.
Every year, on the first day of school, we begin counting down the days until we get out. Every day we have a snow day adds to how much longer we stay in. So while we may rejoice in the days we are able to sleep late and sip hot cocoa, it just takes away from our summer vacation. It also takes away from our learning. Many teachers are not able to get in the necessary curriculum due to all of our snow days. This ends up making things more difficult for us because we are not able to perform well on tests and exams. All of these snow days may seem fun, but in the long run they are not working to our benefit.
This is one of the reasons that the Coventry District is debating eliminating our February vacation. We would go in those extra four days, instead of having to make them up at the end of the year and cut into our summer vacation. Soon, we will find out the results to this survey. Let us know in the comments below what you would prefer! As always, stay safe and warm. We hope you had a wonderful February break!
