The outlook is positive for the upcoming season of Coventry High School’s very own softball and baseball teams. In the softball world, the team is in DivisionⅠand the players know that they belong there. This season, there are around 24 players, including JV and Varsity, and even though the team has a few more members than last year, the players are very happy with the way tryouts went. They have just the right number of players. Every week, the team follows a very strict, demanding schedule. The players worked hard at their two hour practices and spent most of their time in the weight room. However, the long winter created some lingering problems. In the beginning of the season, because of all of the snow, most of the practices were held inside. NIcole Breindel, a junior who plays on the junior varsity squad, said that the first few of their games had been delayed, because “even in the sun, the field is muddy and messy.” Currently, the varsity has a 0-2 record, but they hope to improve their record in the upcoming games. Junior varsity, however, has won both of their games also far, and they hope to keep their winning streak alive.
Baseball players were experiencing a similar start to the season. Due to the fact that the snow stuck to the ground right up until the beginning of the season, tryouts were held inside as well as the first few practices.
Despite weather complications, the baseball team is also looking forward to a successful season. They are ready to take on Division Ⅰwith a competitive and positive attitude. With 9 returning seniors, the team has several responsible role models for the younger players to look up to. This year, the seniors helped tryouts run smoothly because they understood that it was business as usual. Coach Bush says that “it is difficult to practice inside” but “senior leadership” kept the players on track. Overall, baseball players had a “very productive pre-season”. The team is very positive about their upcoming season.
