After many years, Coventry High School finally has a practical track. Chuck Jones, the athletic director for all sports, explained that there was such a long wait for the track because of financial reasons. In 2008, voters rejected a bond when there was an attempt to rebuild the facility. Now that CHS is back on “track,” many benefits can materialize within/around our school.
Chuck Jones was asked a few questions about the new track, and the most significant question was, “How will the high school benefit financially from the new track?” Chuck stated that he thinks the track teams will see the benefit with having home meets and running invitationals, which will bring in money from fees and concession. Coventry High School won’t benefit directly, but it will benefit through its track team. Jones claims that, although there will be a new track, CHS will not have any more home meets than usual. “The league gives a limit on how many track meets a team is allowed to have, but CHS will be able to host invitationals and host divisional class meets.”
In addition to Mr. Jones, two returning members of the team and one new member were also interviewed. Each student was asked if he or she was excited to use the new track, and all answers were yes. Having the new track provides the team with a good resource and also reduces the risk of injuries because it is the proper ground to run on. Kelsie Lopez was happy with being able to have meets at home, as she said that it feels good to show off the facility that we have now. Coventry High School has one of the best facilities in the state, and now the track team can show it off.
Asked if they thought the new track will have a ripple effect and create more student supporters, Thurstina Horton, a new member to the team, said that she hopes more people would come support the team. It is now much easier for people to go to meets, and the new track makes it easier for people to see what Coventry’s track team is capable of. Cameron Frazier claims that he feels better about having a real track to run on. The team now has a “homefield” advantage that they didn’t have before, which makes the whole team feel better about the season.
Having the new track finally completed will make this track season better for everyone in Coventry High School. The track team has a new track to run on, which makes everyone involved happy and excited about hosting meets and invitationals. Students at CHS are now able to attend meets at home, which will create more fans for the Coventry track team. Additionally, the school benefits by getting recognition from other schools for our track and our meets. Now that CHS has students back on “track, students can chase after more wins and rush to watch home meets.
