CHS Community Celebrates Free Speech BY SAMUEL HIERS
Be prepared for some exciting and inspiring events going forward in the week of February 6th! During morning announcements for all of this week and throughout the halls of your school, you will hear and see quotes by various authors and figures throughout history that draw attention to freedoms of speech and the power of the press. Courtesy of your lovely Entry staff, these quotes have been well-chosen to promote our club’s goals and spread awareness of the articles and content we bring to you regularly. More importantly, we hope that these quotes will inspire you to communicate ideas and information more openly without the fear of being prosecuted for what you believe.
Here at The Entry, our goal is to bring students and families in the CHS community together by delivering articles and stories on a regular basis that inform, inspire, and entertain you.
We believe that stories, whether they be tiny little blurbs or lengthy novels, have an incredible power inside of them that can be used in many different ways. They can simply inform us about hot topics or cheer us up when we feel down. They can also move humans in powerful ways, like start revolutions of mind and thought or call for drastic reforms. The amazing impacts that stories, information, and articles can have on the minds of many is sometimes incomprehensible.
But this gift of information and thought could not get to you without the one societal truth that makes these things possible: free speech. It is with the freedom to share your ideas with one another, as used by many democratic countries, that has allowed different presses across the world to thrive and give you cherished information every day. One such press is The Entry, which this very article has been brought to you by!
It is with that idea of free speech and press that The Entry has decided to expand upon and spread awareness of to the CHS community. Mrs. Julie Boyle and Mr. Jason Gomes, our club advisors, as well as Mrs. Johansen, Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator, with support of administration, want to increase the amount of presence and influence that The Entry has in our school, and in what better way could The Entry be promoted than through appreciation for the gift of free speech? It is with that that The Entry staff hopes an impact can be made on the school community through the appreciation of the stories and resources that they have, and that the message of free speech can resonate with them.

Perhaps the most exciting thing to look forward to this week is the deal happening this Friday! The Entry staff, along with various staff members across the school, will wear our newly designed Entry t-shirts and go around to promote membership for our club. Here at The Entry, we are always welcoming of new members, no matter how skilled you are in terms of writing. We hope that in the future, more and more students will come to contribute to our paper, and we will be there to help encourage you to bring your inner creativity out and create stories that will provide inspiration and engagement to your peers. There’s absolutely nothing to fear about contributing your own free thoughts, so come to the Entry and make your voice heard today!
It is The Entry’s hope that as we become more engaged in school wide events in the future, we can help convey to students that one’s individual speech and thoughts have the potential to have incredible power and impact, and that one should never be afraid to speak out. Even when you are not inspired to do so like The Entry is trying to promote this week, let your creativity flow to all around you, and let your true self be heard. As George Orwell once penned in 1984, “But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought”. Do you have the confidence to speak freely? Do you believe wholeheartedly that you could be the change?
