HS1, released May 12th 2016, was Harry Styles’ first album after leaving the famous band One Direction. This is my personal favorite album out of the three that are currently out because of how personal it is.
“Meet me in the Hallway”: This song is one of if not the most heartbreaking songs Harry has written. It’s about a breakup that leaves him so crushed that he wishes he could just take some morphine to take the pain away. It’s definitely one of his most vulnerable songs with lines like, “I gotta get better, gotta get better” and “Just let me know i’ll be at the door (…) hoping you’ll come around” He thinks that it’s his fault that they broke up and he needs to improve himself.
“Sign of the Times”: This is one of Harry’s most well known songs, but most listeners probably don’t know the deep rooted meaning of it. According to sources, “The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there’s a complication. The mother is told, ‘The child is fine, but you’re not going to make it.’ The mother has five minutes to tell the child, ‘Go forth and conquer.’” Now knowing the background information, go back and listen to the song and I guarantee it’ll sound way different!
“Carolina” : This song is like a slap in the face. It’s a very upbeat and cheery song after the previous sad and slow songs. Although the song has some underlying meanings that cannot be disclosed; it has a very chipper melody and it’s a good break from the previous songs.
“Two Ghosts”: Two Ghosts was originally supposed to be a One Direction song, but then came their hiatus so it was repurposed to fit Harry’s album. The song is another slow and heavy one with a lot of emotion and meaning behind it. It’s about how people change and grow apart with lines like, “We’re not who we used to be” or “We’re just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me, trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat”. It’s just an incredible song to listen to when you are in your “feels” or just want a slow peaceful song.
“Sweet Creature”: Such an adorable song. Upon listening to it the first time, it reportedly made Harry’s mother, Anne, cry. It’s about two people willing to put in work to make their relationship prolong. It’s a tooth-rottingly sweet song.
“Only Angel”: What a twist! This song blasts you with rock guitar riffs, and raspy belting. This is one of the prime examples why people can’t just pin one genre on Harry. If you do enjoy his song and want more of Harry singing like this, I recommend his amazing cover of “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac.
“Kiwi”: Another rock song! Again with the raspy voice that is beloved by so many- including me- for a good reason. You can tell, especially with his first album, how wide Harry’s range is which just proves how brilliant he is.
“Ever Since New York”: This song is tied for my favorite song he has ever written. It’s about a very personal experience he had where he sat in a hotel room in Brooklyn New York and got the unfortunate call that his stepfather Robyn, who he was very close with, was diagnosed with cancer which would unfortunately lead to his passing.
“Woman”: A nice jazzy song to dance to. It’s about jealousy with lines such as “Selfish I know, but I don’t ever wanna see you with him.” and, “I hope you can see the shape I’ve been in while he’s touching your skin.”. I’ve found it’s a nice song to listen to as background noise while drawing or doing any other activity.
And finally, the last song on the track, “From the Dining Table”: A sort of mellow way to end the album. This song feels as though it’s a continuation of “Meet me in the Hallway”, they started in the hallway and ended at the dining table. Both songs have the same vibe, almost as if it’s about the same relationship (of course it was never confirmed but music is all about interpretation!)
Conclusion: This album is definitely for people who like more mellow or calming songs -of course excluding Only Angel and Kiwi. In my opinion, this is a no skip album. But listen to it yourself and see what you think!
