Brie Larson stars in the film as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers/Vers. Larson is an incredibly talented actress and is able to portray the emotions of her character perfectly. Throughout the movie, Vers searches to find out about her past while trying to get back to her home planet. However, whilst she does this she uncovers a horrible truth about how she ended up where she is now, and discovers that she had a life back on Earth.
Helping Danvers with her journey is Nick Fury, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson. Fury is a well known and beloved character to the Marvel Universe, so it’s no surprise that Jackson executed his character in his typical fashion. Captain Marvel also dives deeper into Nick’s past, as the movie is set prior to any other Marvel movie except for parts of Captain America. Fans learn many things about who Nick Fury really is, including that he lost his eye from a flurken named Goose.
In addition to the character portrayals, the storyline of the movie was excellent. As mentioned above, the movie centers around Vers, a member of the Kree Starforce command and her life on Hala. After an operation goes awry, Vers finds herself on planet C-53, or Earth. It is here where Vers meets Fury for the first time. However, their meeting ends quickly when Vers is attacked by Skrulls, shapeshifting aliens, and runs to go fight. Fast forward to Fury believing Skrulls are real, the two venture out to discover what they are after.
Through their journey to find out these things, Vers discovers her real name is Carol Danvers, and she had a life on Earth as an Air Force Pilot. To complicate matters even further, Carol soon discovers that the Kree that took her in 6 years ago are actually ruthless killers trying to terminate the Skrull race who are naturally harmless. Additionally, Danvers was only taken in by the Kree because of the power she possessed after absorbing energy from Marvel’s, her old Air Force mentor who was a secret Kree operative that went rogue, energy core. After discovering all of this, Danvers, Fury, and the Skrull captain are able to locate the rest of the alive Skrull population hiding on Mar-vell’s lab.
The movie ends with a huge battle scene that features spectacular special effects. Not only does Captain Marvel’s power reach a new height in this scene, but the highly advanced weapons used by both sides are something that can only be brought justice to through special effects. To me, this scene really proves that Captain Marvel lives up to, if not goes beyond, the reputation that Marvel has for its movies. All in all, the movie featured wonderful actors, an in-depth storyline, and great effects that clearly make it a spectacular movie. Overall, I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
