The World Language Club is a blast! We’re glad to be back and we hope you consider joining!
Returning to school has raised many questions. Among the many questions, students also want to know about school clubs. Will they be running? As COVID-19 cases have started to decline, restrictions have become less strict, and more people, especially teachers, have become vaccinated. Coventry High School is slowly finding out the answer to these questions. Sort of.
One of the largest clubs in the school, World Language Club, was among the many that were greatly impacted by the pandemic. World Language Club is a club where all students are welcome to come take part in fun activities, enjoy treats, hang out with friends, and learn all about cultures and traditions throughout the world! They usually meet once a month after school and the club is run by Spanish teachers Señora Simas and Señora Saccoccia.
The new guidelines have made World Language Club almost near impossible to run without it being vastly different to normal meetings. World Language Club’s meetings usually involve about 60 kids, food, crafts, moving around, etc. The meetings are always fun, and everyone I know that participates has a lot of good things to say. Of course, when you have to be socially distanced, with masks, and with little to no contact with others, this becomes extremely difficult.
The last in-person meeting the club had prior to the 2020-2021 school year was the annual Carnevale-themed meeting on January 29th, 2020. School shutting down on March 13th, 2020, was quite unfortunate for World Language Club, as the following week was supposed to be World Language Week, a week filled with fun cultural events and activities for all to enjoy!
Thankfully, almost a year later, along with many other clubs recently, World Language Club has started back up in business! They had their first meeting virtually after school on February 25th. The meeting was the annual Carnevale-themed meeting, where students made masks, watched videos, socialized, and learned about Carnevale history, all in the celebration of Carnevale! Because the meeting was virtual, the students were encouraged to pick up grab bags from Room 112 or 114 beforehand and the club made their masks from home.
I went to the meeting and I would like to say that if you like having fun, learning about other cultures, hanging with friends, doing fun crafts and activities, or any combination of those, I fully suggest joining the World Language Club. I joined the club last year, and I’ve been to every single meeting they’ve held since I’ve entered CHS! They’re always so entertaining and informational, and you don’t even realize you’re learning! Even if you may not be interested in the cultures of other countries, I suggest you attend a meeting, just to at least see what it’s like. I assure you, you won’t be disappointed, and you may find that you actually ARE interested in other cultures.
I wish I could tell you I have all the answers, but frankly, with the pandemic, I don’t think any of us do. It is unknown whether World Language Club will be able to hold meetings fully in-person anytime soon. However, we did have another virtual meeting on Thursday, March 25th, 2021. The club had a blast making maracas at home via Google Meets.
If you are interested in joining World Language Club, or if you have an idea for a theme for a future meeting, you can find Señora Saccoccia or Señora Simas in rooms 112 and 114 or you can email them at saccocciamaria@coventryschools.net, simaskrystle@coventryschools.net, or join the Google Classroom with the code, lsqfw7q.
