Though far away
Seems like yesterday
On a day commonplace
save its date and its day
The ways in which we feigned
would change and/or wane
March 13th, 2020
Though far away
Seems like yesterday
A year’s time
Wasted
Love and laughter
left for greed and fear
Love only in bargains
Laughter to hide pain
For a year and
Counting
Power and prejudice
soiling hardly vestal soil
and soil beyond borders
Power and prejudice
tried to kill a man
and a hundred more
in the year
Of fear
I can hear hearts beating
machines beeping
frontlines weeping
I can feel the heat of the fires
through glowing glass windows
Burning white buildings
built with the sweat
from melting pots
One year later
Still too little too late
The land of the free
Still trapped in fear
The smoke will settle
To trees of metal
The first breath
Will clear
Our minds
And our hearts
