Achieving New Year’s Resolutions By Christiana Votta
Usually, people make a list of what they want to improve on in the upcoming year, whether it is dieting or reading more books. However, not everyone fulfills the goals they create for themselves. Sometimes the goals we set for ourselves are too difficult or unrealistic to achieve all at once, which leads to not staying true to our goal. So it's very important that when we create a New Year's list, we keep in mind that the goals should be realistic.
New year resolutions, first started in 2000 B.C in ancient Mesopotamia, were created annually to symbolize goals or ambitions that people wanted to achieve. Eventually, this yearly ritual became a part of modern-day culture.
So it’s very important that when we create a New Year’s list, we keep in mind that the goals should be realistic.
When I create my list, I try to create goals I know I can achieve with time. For example, my goals have been improving my art and studying anatomy. Since art is subjective, I can look at my art and think I have improved and that’s all that matters. Since everyone interprets things differently, someone might think my art is incredible, and others might not. We know ourselves the best and we know our limits. If we keep this in mind, we will have a higher chance of achieving our ambitions for the new year.
Thankfully, I got the chance to talk to students and ask them what their new year’s resolutions were for school. One of the students who I got the chance to interview was Lilly Anctil, a fellow freshman. I asked her what her New year resolutions were for school and she said, “To get better grades from last quarter, definitely.” Once I heard this I asked, how will you achieve this? “By studying, hopefully,” she responded. I interviewed other students and all of their responses ended up being quite similar. Some students said they would like to study more, and others stated how they wanted to participate in school activities.
Overall, no matter what your plans are for the new year, I am sure it will be fulfilling nonetheless. Let’s make sure the upcoming year is a great one, with lots of laughs and happiness. Happy Holidays!
