Initially, the planning committee feared a lack of interest in attending the dance would cause it to be canceled. This was a concern because if not enough tickets are sold to the semi-formal, this could affect our budget for prom, which is more worrisome for the sophomores as their junior prom is just next year. However, the night ended up being a success what a great turnout as many tickets were sold on the last day of sales.
On Friday, May 17th the freshman/sophomore semi-formal dance was held. The dance sold over 200 tickets and there was a good mixture of 9th and 10th graders who attended. The dance was loud, exciting, and with some great music choices by the students, including both new songs and classic songs. Overall, the dance was a great success!!!

After asking some of my 9th-grade peers about the experience of the dance and or what they would change, there were various opinions and suggestions. Most common was the complaint about more tables needed closer to the food and more tables in general so that people could sit near each other. Another suggestion was a truer following through of the theme with more decorations. In addition to decorations and theme, students would have preferred if the larger student body had some input on the theme and possible decor for the night. The council of students that made all the decisions for dance is made up of about eight people. The class council is meant to be representative of the student body however the student body wish that they had a say in the process.
Another notable comment from both the freshmen and sophomores was that the DJ consistently did not play the music that some of the students requested. In the DJ’s defense, however, some of the music was too explicit to play as there were no “clean” versions of the song available. Yet some songs that were considered appropriate without any foul language were repeatedly not played although requested multiple times. As music is a crucial aspect to the dance some of the students were disappointed.
All in all, despite some changes possibly to be made going forward, the majority of sophomores enjoyed the last of their semi-formal dances as they prepare for the prom, and the freshman enjoyed their first semi-formal, already looking forward to next year’s dance.
