As the school year is coming to an end and summer vacation is around the corner, searching for a job could be a top priority. For teenagers, it can often be much harder to find a job because of our age, but with help from Mrs. Siemmao, your job search can be less of a hassle.
According to Mrs. Siemmao, you should always consider the location of the jobs you are looking into. You want to make sure it is convenient for you so it can be easier to get there. Also, discuss with your parents your transportation so you can make sure you will be able to get to and from your job.
Mrs. Siemmao recommends navigating the Coventry recreation website. There is a Summer Employment Application right on the website that gives a list of open jobs for teenagers during the summer. Just fill it out and give it to the Coventry Department of Parks and Recreation and a job could be made available for you. Another place to look for a job is the RI Parks website where kids can apply for state park jobs. This work can vary from jobs at beaches to even Goddard Park. These jobs can consist of being a lifeguard at the beach or taking care of Rhode Island’s local parks.
A popular place that high school students often find jobs is at the YMCA Summer Camps. Students can apply to be counselors or junior counselors. The job would consist of being in charge of children and making their camp experience an enjoyable time. If you look on the YMCA website you can find an application ready to be filled out. The Rhode Island Department of Labor also has a great website listing possible jobs for students to find something that they are really interested in.
Mrs. Siemmao also suggested looking for work at Dunkin’ Donuts, Old Theater Diner, Dave’s, and other popular chains like Subway. These places often accept young applicants, especially in the summer hours. If you are interested in babysitting, a good tip is to put out some flyers or to text people you know and are comfortable with to ask if they need one or if they know someone that needs a babysitter.
When going on a job search, sometimes just going into a store might make a better impression. If you apply to a lot of places it is always a good idea to make a folder of the places you applied to in order to keep yourself organized and to make your searching easier so you don’t apply somewhere twice. If you go in for an interview make sure you look presentable because first impressions always matter and can make a big difference.
During the interview, or when you write an application, try to “sell” yourself to the place and list your skills, awards, honors or AP classes, and computer skills, sports and hobbies. As Mrs. Siemmao said, “Your skill is significant!”
Also, in interviews, ask the person questions about the job to show them you are interested. Think about eye contact, manners, and share your experiences that you think can help you perform the job. During the interview share the days that you might need to have off especially since the summer is when families take vacations. It’s better to tell them right away so they can take that into their consideration when they question if they want you for the job
Even though job searches can be hard for the summer, especially because students are young, these tips should make the search easier and more accessible. With summer almost here it’s best to start searching and applying now!
