The drama club at Coventry High recently produced the play And A Child Shall Lead. The well-chosen cast had a total of ten members, but those were not the only people who made the play possible. There were also people backstage who coordinated outfits and makeup during countless hours at rehearsal.
A Child Shall Lead tells the story of ten children during the Holocaust who were taken away from their families and forced to house together. This event brought them close together and created bonds that would only be broken by death. Together, the children began writing a newspaper, The Vedem Report, in order to make people outside of the camps more aware of the terrible actions happening inside.
Recently, all ninth grade students have been researching the Holocaust. In classes, they have been reading Night, the true story of Elie Wiesel’s experience in a concentration camp.
As a group, the ninth graders headed to the auditorium for an in-school field trip. The play was able to give yet another perspective on the Holocaust. This assembly was a very important experience for all ninth graders because it is important to learn about such events and experience the emotions that these children felt while living together.
The beautifully executed play had a number of emotional scenes. There was sadness, laughter, and even romance. While these emotions are often hard to portray, those cast in the play did their job well.
Thank you to the cast, Mr. Wilkinson, and all the crew members that put time and dedication into making this play wonderful!
