Before the pivotal events of September 11th, 2001, it can be argued that Americans didn’t acknowledge soldiers with as much respect as they deserved for risking their lives in the name of freedom. For ten years, the Wounded Warriors Project has been providing servicemen and women returning from war and their family members with recognition for their service and with different types of assistance. Many soldiers who experienced battle come back to America with some type of mental or physical injury, and/or illness.
Transitioning back to civilian life can present many challenges to the wounded service members. These may include PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder,) severe physical injuries that involve adapting to a handicapped lifestyle, need for financial assistance, and the desperate need for career training. The Wounded Warriors Project’s focus is to provide veterans with support so that they can better adjust to life at home and to encourage “economic empowerment and engagement,” as the Project’s website says.
So what is Coventry High doing to support the Wounded Warriors Project? The Junior ROTC club is hosting a fundraiser outside the cafeterias so you can donate some of your “couch money” to help get these wounded warriors back on their feet. Show your respect and gratitude for those who fight for our freedom by sparing a dollar and contributing to the cause.
