UT is a program that promotes leadership, creativity, and teamwork by letting students lead and design the show. The Unified Theater website says, “At Unified Theater, young people with and without disabilities, of all backgrounds, come together as equals to put on a production”. This program was founded by two 15 year olds at Conard High School who thought it was important to have all types of people included in theater programs. These programs have spread all over Rhode Island, Connecticut and even California. In fact, Exeter, West Greenwich is having a Unified production in May. According to the Unified Theater website, 9,000 students have been involved in these productions.
This is Unified Theater’s first year at Coventry High School since they weren’t able to accomplish a production last year due to starting the process too late. At CHS, everyone in the group is involved in the process. People suggest ideas for the plot, costumes, sets and props. Decisions are made through group discussions where no ideas are bad ideas and everyone is equal. The group dynamic is open and accepting to all new ideas.
Since the play is being written from scratch by students, the play doesn’t have a set plot yet. The overarching theme is inclusiveness, touching on relatable subjects that any person can connect to. Characters are created to suit each person’s interest and abilities so that everyone fits into the play perfectly. Each meeting is very enjoyable for students, giving them the chance to get work done while also still having fun.
Anyone is welcome to join. The program exists so that anyone can thrive no matter their abilities. Doors are open for actors, musicians, singers, dancers, performers or anyone who wants to join. Meetings are on Wednesdays in the library from 4-5:30.
