The Benefits of Volunteering: My Experience at a Pet Refuge
I was able to connect with many cats at the shelter while I was there, and it made me so happy. Other people could have the same experience I did, maybe even better, if they gave some of their time to the cause. There may be a lot of work that comes with it, but trust me it will be worth it. Nothing amounts to the feeling you get when you are doing something good for others.
The Benefits of Volunteering
By Nicole Breindel
Why do people need to volunteer? Students may have to volunteer for school activities, or maybe they made a poor life decision and have to do community service for court. No matter the reason, volunteering/doing community service is something that most people have to do. Some people even continue volunteering at places long after they have to, like me.
In order to be accepted into the national honor society at Coventry High School, I had to do a total of 30 hours of community service. I already had about 24 hours, but I needed the other 6 quickly. I knew of a no-kill cat shelter in North Kingstown, Pet Refuge, and I figured I would try there. I was able to help out for a whole Saturday and fell in love with it. They probably have just under 100 cats in total, most at the shelter but some in foster homes. They take pride in what they do, which is really inspiring.
Being able to volunteer at such a valuable place was a great experience for me, especially because I am a cat person. I have 2 of my own and I love them. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to do my hours doing something I really enjoyed. While I was there I had to clean their show room, change food, do laundry and fold newspapers for the crates. There was a lot for me to do, but it didn’t seem like it because I knew that I was helping animals that couldn’t help themselves. It is an amazing feeling knowing that you’re making another life better and more enjoyable.
A personal example I have pertains to my day at the shelter with 2 younger cats that had been abandoned. They were so terrified that they were crouched down in the corners of the crate with their ears completely down. A lady that came in took one of them out to hold it so the cat could have some human interaction. The poor kitten looked so scared, so I asked the lady if I could hold it. After a couple of minutes being in my arms the cat’s ears started to perk up and it looked around. I knew that I made even the slightest difference to that little life and it made me feel great. From that moment forward both kittens kept their ears up.
The Pet Refuge in North Kingstown is a really good place to volunteer if you need hours, or if you just want to receive your own feeling of helping innocent lives.
