Literature Is My Utopia BY Lily Chace
I know that as I grow older reading will always be a part of my life. My story, which I continue to write and revise, is only just beginning. I am thankful for the guidance and friendship of books and the people around me who love them too!
Helen Keller once proclaimed, “Literature is my Utopia.”I completely relate to her, as my greatest passion, the thing I enjoy the most in life is reading a good book. Once I start reading, I get so swept up that all I can think about is what could possibly happen next. I don’t know what it is about reading, but the way that an author creates such captivating stories amazes me. My favorite part about reading is chatting about my favorite books with my grandmother. We love exchanging our favorite books and enjoy talking about what our favorite parts were. This connection has always inspired my passion for books.
My favorite book growing up was The Giver by Lois Lowry. My cousin gave me this book at a young age and, from the first time I read it, I fell in love with Jonas and the utopian society. I have read the novel about ten times. It is fairly short and bittersweet. I love the family in the story and how much Jonas and his family care for each other. I too have a very tight-knit relationship with my extended family. Most of all I enjoy the relationship between Jonas and the Giver, because it reminds me of all the role models I have in my life and how they have helped me get where I am today. I want to use the lessons I have been taught to help others similarly to the way Jonas uses the memories the Giver has transferred to him to help his brother Gabriel.
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is another book I love immensely. I relate well to the main character, Denny. Denny faces countless obstacles and is forced to make crucial life decisions. While Denny faces many struggles, his dog Enzo is by his side. I have a few struggles I face often, the main one being my type 1 diabetes. While every day is not a good day, I can always look to my dogs, Lexi and Pico, to cheer me up. Part of my struggle is that I just don’t always have the motivation to get up and have to manually take insulin and test my blood sugar every time I eat anything. Living with diabetes since I was five years old, I feel thankful to have amazing support in my life unlike Denny and I try my best to lean on them and make sure I do my best to stay on top of my physical well-being.
A final book that has helped me grow and changed me perhaps the most is My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Anna was born to be used as a donor for her sister Kate who has terminal cancer, and she feels lost in the world because her whole purpose is to provide a donation of body parts. Finally, one day Anna goes to a lawyer, who is the first person to help her attempt to gain control of her life. The story inspires me to break out and be my own person. I pride myself on my uniqueness and my ability to be a people person. I strive to have the confidence to be like Anna and go against what others think when it is time to do what is best for me. My greatest traits are my vivacious personality and my love for reading, and My Sister’s Keeper as well as other powerful books continue to show me that being myself and being happy with who I am is much more important than conforming to others’ standards. I know that as I grow older reading will always be a part of my life. My story, which I continue to write and revise, is only just beginning. I am thankful for the guidance and friendship of books and the people around me who love them too!
Wonderfully written, and a pleasure to read.
