Criminal Justice: A Great Opportunity for CHS Students By Gabriella Cahoone
CHS has many great career and tech programs, and Criminal Justice is one such program. This class is an amazing choice for students interested in law enforcement.
CHS has many great career and tech programs, and Criminal Justice is one such program. This class is an amazing choice for students interested in law enforcement. Mr. Read, who teaches the class, said, “There are many career paths that our CJ program links to. For example, police officers, security officers, correctional officers, judicial members, lawyers, CSI technicians, and criminal profilers. Seeing that our current course follows several different fields, there is a large amount of opportunity for students.”
Along with the opportunities that this class offers, it could also be good for students who find the subject matter interesting, or who maybe want to learn more about the laws they follow or the people who uphold them. According to Mr. Read, “the Criminal Justice Program is important first off because obviously there is a lot of interest in the program. I started last year with 62 students enrolled in the program, and this year there are 114 students. I also think it is very important that I hopefully spark some type of interest in each student to make them safer in the community. I realize not all my students will become police officers, correctional officers, lawyers or judges, however, if I can help teach them basic functions of our CJ system, this will assist them in being safe, productive members of society.”
Asked what students entering the program could expect, Mr. Read responded that “as students enter into CJ1, Introduction to Criminal Justice, they receive the basic foundation of all 3 major components of the CJ system: Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Judicial Systems. Usually, during the first year course, students sometimes find something that interests them and encourages them to continue in this CTE track.”
Furthermore, “each of the courses teaches different types of things. To be general, our CJ1 course lays a foundation of knowledge of the entire CJ system. Our CJ2 course, Crime Scene Investigation, allows students to first learn principles of crime scene processing and then it puts them into action by completing crime scenes from start to finish. Our third-year course, Law and Society, is more of a theory class which introduces students to criminology, causes of criminal behavior, and the effects on society. We also conduct several field trips throughout the year and have a number of guest speakers come into the school for lectures and demonstrations. We also have started a CJ club here at CHS where we meet once or twice a month after school to have fun, go over special issues, and explore other educational opportunities as a club.” If a student isn’t exactly interested in joining the class, they can certainly join the club.
From personal experience, I can say that this program is amazing and informational. There isn’t much homework, although there is note taking, quizzes, and tests. I haven’t been in this program that long, but I’m honestly already in love with it. I want to be a police officer or a criminal profiler, so this program is an amazing opportunity. Mr. Read is a very good teacher and he really sells the program!
