Reflecting on the Pros and Cons of Prom by Christiana Votta
It's that time once a year again where we reflect upon the Junior and Senior prom, the one night of the year where students get to cut loose and look their best. However, is the price and experience of prom really worth it?
It’s that time once a year again where we reflect upon the Junior and Senior prom, the one night of the year where students get to cut loose and look their best. However, is the price and experience of prom really worth it?
I personally enjoyed Prom, I felt like the 65 dollar tickets were worth the experience to an extent. Prom tickets this year cost 65 dollars, if you have a job this isn’t a horrendous amount to spend. However, if some students still rely on their parents or guardians for pocket money, the cost could be considered too much. (More so since students have to buy dresses/suits as well, however the Oaker Closet is available to cover this aspect). Most classmates of mine bought dresses that had a range of costs from 90-300 dollars, which goes to show the cost of prom extends from just the 65 dollar tickets.
The food also aided the price of the tickets, however was the food good? The menu of the night consisted of salad, pasta, chicken parmesan, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, and ice cream for dessert. In theory this is a pretty solid menu, however in execution it fell short of myself and others expectations. According to one student“the food lacked salt” however “it looked alright”. By no means was the food not edible, however based on a majority of students’ thoughts the food lacked flavor, which made it unappealing (the food was mid to say the least). There was another incident regarding dessert, the dessert wasn’t bad however, there was not enough for every attendee. This was found out when one of my friends who asked for ice cream was turned away because the food service ran out of ice cream. At times it felt like the staff or the person in charge of the amount of items was not prepared fully for the event. However, aspects like this can be difficult to fully execute efficiently when you have most junior and senior year students in the same space. However, the main thing to remember if you’re going to next year’s prom is don’t go for the food, if you do you’ll be disappointed. Instead go out to a local restaurant with friends and enjoy your properly seasoned food.
Besides the food aspect, prom was very fun, the venue was beautiful, the music playlist was great (especially since you could request songs). Prom is a great place where you can spend time and cut loose with friends. From dancing to trying to yell above the sound of the music so the person next to you can hear you. It was a great experience and personally if you don’t focus mainly on the food. The staff was great, they were always super helpful and nice, however the poor staff were always on the run. Whether it was to clean a spill or fetch something an attendee needed.
So is prom worth it? According to my friend Brandon “If the tickets cost $40 instead of $60 maybe prom would have been worth it then”. However its best to remember prom is all about an experience and depending on the person wages whether the event is worth it or not. But, in my opinion, being able to hangout with friends in a large setting all dressed up is worth the extended $65 even if it’s one of CHS ‘more pricey events.
