Changes to the Prom at CHS
With all of the recent changes, we need to be informed. Since prom is one of the major events that we look forward to year after year, we would have liked to have known about the changes sooner. However, Mr. Hobin will be looking at the turnout and considering feedback before deciding if the new system worked, and whether or not the junior and senior prom will always be combined.

Lately, students have had many questions about the upcoming prom. Most seniors are not happy that their last prom here at Coventry High School has to be shared with the junior class. Many students are questioning the reasoning behind the decision. We were able to sit down and discuss this topic with Mr. Hobin. In recent conversations, Mr. Hobin, and his fellow administrators, have come to the realization that many juniors were going with seniors and vice versa, which meant that students were attending both proms. At every school dance, whether it’s here at Coventry or any other school, dancing is always an issue. The issue with the dancing causes the staff chaperoning the dance to continuously discipline kids. Why would teachers want to continually nag kids to stop dancing inappropriately when they’re just trying to enjoy a nice event as well. Mr. Hobin made a valid point, “If you’re grandma was in the room, would you dance like this?” Certainly, this point is something to think about when you’re dancing. With the amount of teachers needed to chaperone every dance, and having the same teachers sign up for both, the chaperoning pool is limited. Teachers have lives of their own and being out at every dance takes time away from their family. If teachers are spending time away from their families, they don’t want to keep tabs on kids for their dancing or for getting into fights.
Ticket sales were held this past week and many kids were able to purchase tickets for themselves and their date. Eligibility was a big
factor since seniors and juniors must have the appropriate amount of absences to be able to attend the prom. It’s up to you to know whether you can or cannot attend. Since the dance is combined, many students were wondering if tickets would be limited. They are not. The venue that Mr. Hobin and selected CHS staff picked is Rhodes on the Pawtuxet. The venue is large enough for any student wanting to attend because it includes both downstairs and upstairs seating. Although the cost of admission is expensive, tickets are not the only thing you have to worry about paying for. Girls have to worry about getting their hair, makeup, and nails done, while also focusing on finding the perfect dress and shoes. But don’t forget flowers. Prom season is certainly an expensive time of year, which is another good reason the prom will be combined.
Coventry High School has always been proud to offer Cinderella’s Closet for anyone who is in need of a dress but short on money. Cinderella’s Closet is a room in the school full of dresses that students are more than welcome to borrow, alter, or change. Students are only asked to dry clean the dress before returning and to give the new size of the dress if it had been altered. For future proms, feel free to see Mrs. Swain, Mrs. Ferguson, or Mrs. Macomber and they will set up a private appointment with you.
Many of the girls here at Coventry High School follow trends. We see what’s in and go about
trying to find the perfect dress to fit what’s in style. What happens to be in style today is two piece dresses. Two piece dresses separate at the lower mid section, leaving some skin showing. We all may think, what’s wrong with this when girls are wearing open backs and low cut dresses? Well, we asked Mr. Hobin. He replied,“ We send kids home for that as well. We will ask you to change and tell you to come back in a different dress.” Mr.Hobin is not telling girls, or even parents, that their values are wrong. He just does not want trouble and wants everyone to have a great time.
In the past, when senior prom was just senior prom, seniors were able to leave at 10:30 in the morning to have more time to get ready. This year, because half the school will be leaving, adjustments had to be made. Since prom will be held on an advisory day, the day will be modified so that advisory is at the end of the day. With the benefit of seniors and many juniors being able to drive, students are welcome to leave at 12:30. If a student is leaving early, they must provide their own transportation. If you don’t have a ride, no problem. You’re able to stay in the library and wait until everyone else is dismissed at 1:55 and proceed with your regular transportation.
Reading into the qualifications for what is not appropriate for this year’s prom, many students came across information about age limits. Some may have realized the age limit for prom (18 years old) was different from homecoming (21 years old). We asked Mr. Hobin about this new development and he said, “If a 19 year old wants to come, just let us know. If they are in good standing with us, I don’t see a reason why they couldn’t go.”
With prom just hours away, relax, have a great time, and enjoy the event!
