FIVE Ways to Help People During the Holiday Season BY SYDNEY HAMMER

Five Ways to Help People During the Holiday Season
BY SYDNEY HAMMER
As the holiday season is now in full effect, it is even more important that we, as a community of young adults, take the time to help others that may not be as fortunate as we are. This time of year presents many opportunities for such actions to be made, and by participating in even the smallest one, you could bring joy and merriment to so many.
The first way you could help someone during the holidays is by donating to a food or toy drive. This is probably the most inexpensive way to give back during this season, as food and toys can both be purchased at low costs. Stores such as the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar, have canned goods and a variety of toys starting at less than a dollar. These items are very inexpensive and will bring comfort and happiness to those receiving them. At such a low cost, and such a high reward, it would truly be ridiculous not to give back to those in need this way.
Another way you can help others during the holidays is by “adopting a family.” This method is very similar to donating to a food or toy drive, except for the fact that the gifts are catered to individuals. So, instead of buying items that you hope someone will enjoy, you can select gifts that are asked for by children and families in need. This option provides a much more personalized touch, but will also require a little more money. But, if you are willing to spend some extra cash to brighten someone’s December, then adopting a family is a cause you should really consider.
A third way you can help individuals during the holidays is by visiting a nursing home. Whether you choose to do this on your own, with friends, with a school club, or some other way, visiting a nursing home is a great way to spread cheer during the holiday season. When going, you could make holiday cards to pass out to the residents, bake cookies, sing Christmas carols, and so much more. There are countless ways to bring happiness to those in nursing homes, and many are glad just to see a new smiling, friendly face.
A fourth way that you can help individuals during the holidays is to bring food to the homeless or homeless shelters. Individuals that are homeless, especially those on the street, never have the luxury of having a good home cooked meal. In your kitchen, you can easily make a nutritious, and filling meal, that will guarantee those less fortunate to have a happy holiday. At a homeless shelter, you can volunteer to pass out food or knit blankets to give away. Once again, actions like this are guaranteed to spread happiness and bring cheer to countless individuals.
A fifth and final way you can help individuals during the holiday season is by committing a random act of kindness. An opportunity like this can’t be planned or expected and must be acted upon at the moment. Once completed, this act will not only cheer up your day, but someone else’s as well.
There are many things one can do to help people during the holidays. They aren’t limited to the list above, and in actuality, can be found in the simplest task. But, whether they are planned and elaborate, or small and unexpected, helping someone in need will not only improve their day and bring a smile to their face, but to yours as well.
