CHECKING IN WITH OUR PAL LUCIAN BY KYLE DANTE

CHECKING IN WITH OUR PAL LUCIAN

If you ask most CHS students, they will likely tell you that Mr. Joseph Lucian was one of the absolute best assistant principals. He made his first appearance during the 2006 school year. “Lucian” (as most called him) would go on to mentor the classes of 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
Describing the efforts Mr. Lucian puts forth is rather difficult. A seemingly laidback individual, Mr. Lucian worked tirelessly to ensure his CHS students had the best experience possible. At times, he was humorous to brighten up someone’s day. Other times he was there to help a student in need emotionally.
Outside of school, I learned more about Mr. Lucian’s character. For example, during the 2016 holiday season, the school launched its annual gift drive. Students who lacked the financial ability were given gift certificates and small items to celebrate from the faculty. I got to travel with Mr. Lucian to help out the students in need who were out. The guy has a huge heart.
Additionally, he’s not afraid to give his fellow students a laugh. At several pep rallys, Mr. Lucian portrayed a West Warwick Wizard in an over-the-top fashion; he usually got his butt kicked for disowning the Oaker Nation. He does not take himself too seriously.
Recently, there were several changes made in terms of faculty for the 2017-2018 school year in the Coventry District. Dr. Arthur Lisi, ASFMS’ principal from late-2013 to 2017, retired along with long-term English teacher and vice-principal, Mrs. Mary-Lou Bettez. Shortly afterward, Mr. Lucian and Mrs. Noorbaloochi accepted positions as principal and vice-principal.
When the graduation outfit company Jostens visited a few weeks back, Mr. Hobin said there was a special guest who would sign the class of 2018’s banner to hang. The class of 2018 reacted thunderously when Mr. Lucian entered. I was among those students, for Mr. Lucian was a man we all love and respect.
Recently, I was lucky enough to interview Mr. Lucian for old times sake and to get the update on his new experiences. Here is my interview:
Kyle: How did you react to the news of being the new principal? Mr. Lucian: “I was excited for the new challenge and to meet new kids, parents, and faculty. Also, I was sad because I was leaving a place where I liked all of the faculty, students, and parents.”
K: How difficult was the transition from one place to another? L: “The shift changed from spending more time working with students as a VP to working with more with the faculty and needs of running the building.”
K: Speaking of which, how difficult was it entering a new role from before? L: “Priorities shifted to meetings with the staff, organizing protocols, learning how the school functions and the “go-to” people to ask questions, such as the custodians, guidance department, department heads, and support staff took up most of the time. It has also become a 7 day a week job. *laughs* Don’t get me started on the number of emails! It takes a great deal of time.”
K: What do you do now as a principal? L: “All of the things mentioned before but now there is a rhythm starting to develop to get things accomplished. I also can now look forward to making positive, new changes that are kid-centered to try to get the students ready for the future.”
K: Does the process as principal differ from your process as vice principal? L: “Absolutely! As VP the main focus is student-centered, as a principal it becomes a balancing act between the students and faculty.”
K: What is your favorite aspect of being principal? L: “Being able to see student and faculty successes. I LOVE seeing students smile and have fun at school.”
K: On that subject, what is your least favorite aspect? L: Budget limitations that restrict new programs or to get more staff to help our students.
K: Do you miss CHS? L: “A LOT! …Both students and faculty!”
K: What do you hope to accomplish as the principal? L: “Establish a school where kids have fun, LOVE to learn, keep them safe and get them ready for the future!”
K: Are there any final thoughts you have for the graduating class of 2018 and the faculty? L: “First, I miss you all! Secondly, I am so proud of you all and can not wait to see you all graduate after twelve years of work, and lastly, I wish nothing but success, happiness and good fortune for everyone. It has been an honor to have been your VP for 3 years and now as the future awaits you all become your “pal”.
Kyle Dante and Mr. Lucian conclude the interview shared here.
On behalf of the class of 2018 and all of Coventry High School, I wish Mr. Lucian as well as Ms. Noorbaloochi the best in continuing their new positions. I also wish to thank them for their service in making the change from middle school to high school smoother than normal. All of us cannot wait to hear of the new developments mentioned that can improve the education system of Coventry Public Schools.
