Why I Am Not Interested in Going to China Anytime Soon BY Jordan Brochu

Why I Am Not Interested in Going to China Anytime Soon

As Americans, I’m sure we’ve all heard something bad or different about China before, but, in my English class while reading Orwell’s Animal Farm, I’ve learned some new, interesting, and quite disturbing facts about what is going on in China currently. The main thing I learned is that China is restricting many internet websites from their people using a “great firewall.” Those caught on a restricted site on the internet by the internet police could most likely get some sort of punishment or even jail time. Censorship is pretty serious; the Communist Government does not mess around with defying its rules. China’s government and how they restrict citizens from getting information online is sickening because Chinese citizens are having their freedom taken away. It’s downright criminal.
The Chinese government hires thousands and thousands of agents to police and restrict certain sites on the internet containing information they would like to hide from the citizens of China (Communism). They set up what is known as the “Great Firewall” to block almost everything such as Google, Youtube, or Facebook. Even more recently, the government of China now is cutting the mobile service of people who live in the city of Xinjiang who have found “ladders” over the firewall. “ The Chinese government has long focused on software that circumvents the Great Firewall, like virtual private networks. But the move to suspend mobile phone accounts linked to the software demonstrates a new level of urgency” (Mozur). Not only are they restricting internet websites but now China’s Communist government wants to cut the mobile service of its citizens. What China’s government does is criminally sickening.
The sick, criminal actions China is inflicting upon its citizens should be stopped in its tracks because it seems like they are becoming less and less free with each new day. I think until China elects some new people into their political office, then we may see a change. If there is no internet liberation, soon enough perhaps people will be upset enough to rebel in more extreme ways other than just working even harder to get around the firewall. I see big riots heading China’s way if they don’t do something to change for the good. Seeing what is happening in China makes me appreciate the freedom I’ve been given as an American. While I’m not free to do everything, Ii definitely would not be given as much freedom if I lived in China. Maybe it would help if our new president (hopefully Bernie) went to China and talked to their world leader about changing things. If I could do something in America to help, I would. I’d just like to see China become a better place with more freedom of speech and democracy.
