WHY IS THE DAY OF LOVE SO HATED? By LILY MANCINI
It seems as any person you meet has different emotions about Valentines Day. Whether they think it’s stupid, a great way to celebrate a love, or too commercialized, the controversial holiday remains unsettled. Many will complain of sadness from looking at couples, or think it’s pointless as it is only one day. As everyone has a different idea, Valentine's day has a variety of origins and meanings worth exploring.
WHY IS THE DAY OF LOVE SO HATED?

It seems as any person you meet has different emotions about Valentines Day. Whether they think it’s stupid, a great way to celebrate a love, or too commercialized, the controversial holiday remains unsettled. Many will complain of sadness from looking at couples, or think it’s pointless as it is only one day. As everyone has a different idea, Valentine’s day has a variety of origins and meanings worth exploring.
Based on the legends of Saint Valentine, the “forever alone” day is celebrated in February in various cultures, as this month is widely celebrated as the ”love” month. Saint Valentine, the cause of it all, does not have the luxury of one accepted story. However, they all have a common theme of love or compassion. One legend describes Valentine as a priest going against orders of defying young men of marriage and allowing secret marriages, risking the fatal punishment. Another suggests he wrote love letters from the comfort of a jail cell to a girl outside, popularizing the greeting (since it was his legitimate name) and ending with the classic “from your Valentine”.
In modern day, the holiday isn’t as centered around a specific mystery encompassing the Saint’s, but around the whole meaning of love itself. Personally, this is why I don’t understand the bitterness surrounding it, usually brought on by single patrons mortified by the fact that people in love would like to celebrate that love. Many also don’t realize that it isn’t just romantic couples who fit the mold; friends, family and even pets deserve a celebration of your love too. So, next Valentine’s day, let’s send special love to the most special people in your life in the honor of Saint Valentine and all things endearing, whether they be a significant other or not.
