Where Has the Time Gone? By Christiana Votta
Do you ever stop and think, "Where has the time gone?” One minute it's September and the next it's 70 degrees and summer vacation is underway. But why does time seem to flow so fast, especially this year?
Do you ever stop and think, “Where has the time gone?” One minute it’s September and the next it’s 70 degrees and summer vacation is underway. But why does time seem to flow so fast, especially this year? For one, it has been several years since the start of the pandemic put our world literally and figuratively on pause. It’s our first completely normal year without regulations, and that transitioning period has seemed to end. This means schools are allowed to host fun events like spirit week, dances, and other activities. But how does this connect back to the topic of time flying?
When we are busy or hopping from one activity to another, we don’t inherently notice the passage of time. This is especially true for students! Students are in school and have many have extracurricular activities and even work. What adds to the passing of time is when you get into a routine, and every day is the same. It almost feels like your days are starting to blend, which leads to the feeling of time being sped up. But this all comes down to psychology and the understanding of the brain/ human emotions.
Writer Calum Boyle shares that “our perception of time is inherently linked to how much time we have already lived.” As we get older we collect information and experiences, which means we have more memories we can look back and reflect on. I can attest to this because when I was younger, days seemed to last forever, especially if I was faced with boredom or a negative situation. But now, with my fast paced schedule and always having to be on the go, it feels like I just time-traveled. My concept of time is distorted in a sense. So, we can expect time to “go faster” as we age. Maybe you have heard your parents or another adult in your life say, “ After high school, things go by fast”. It is true, as we age we become busier. We even tend to lean more on schedules than anything else. Have you also noticed that time has been speeding up? If so, what in your life do you think is adding to this?
