Weezer’s Black Album a Disappointment BY ELLIOT MANN

Weezer’s Black Album a Disappointment BY Elliot Mann
I am a bit of a music geek. I listen to music every chance I get– walking through the hallways, on the bus, and even in class (sometimes). And Weezer has been one of the bands that helped to develop my taste in music.
From their “Blue Album”, an album which I repeatedly listened to while riding on the bus during middle school (and still do to this day) that’s full of great catchy guitar riffs, to “The White Album”, a very beach-centric album that has the same kind of catchy guitar riffs of the 90s while still feeling like a new album.
So, when Weezer released the first single from their upcoming album I was pretty optimistic. That single was, “Can’t Knock the Hustle”, the first song on the album. This song showcases Weezer’s ability to take inspiration from many different genres such as disco and funk while still maintaining their core rock elements. The track uses many instruments ranging from lead and bass guitars to horns and synthesizers with some backup singers for added effect.
Other notable tracks include: “High As A Kite”, ironically the darkest song on the album with depressing lyrics, heavy guitars and is accompanied by a music video resembling Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, and “I’m Just Being Honest” a more humorous track about the lead singer, Rivers Cuomo, telling someone their band sucks and asking for forgiveness.
Other than those songs, this album is pretty much a major disappointment. Songs like “Zombie Bastards” and “Living In L.A.” are catchy but there’s not much behind them. They just sound repetitive and I get annoyed with them quickly. Then there’s “The Prince Who Wanted Everything” a song with painfully corny lyrics and filed with annoying “Do do do”’s.
I give this album a C. It has a few worthwhile tracks but is inconsistent and overall a boring experience. You could listen to this album if you are a fan of Weezer and are interested to see what they are up to nowadays, but I’d recommend just checking out the previously mentioned tracks: “Can’t Knock The Hustle” “High As A Kite” and “I’m Just Being Honest”
You can listen to “The Black Album” on YouTube and Spotify.
