WCVY Making Waves Once Again By LAWRENCE MARK CABBABE

Radio Station back up and running 24/7! 91.5 WCVY Coventry High School.

WCVY 91.5.  Remember our radio station?  It could feel like years have passed since that frequency was spoken of.  When the pandemic began, our long running radio station met its first shut down in 42 years.  And after about a year and a half of radio silence, a glimmer of hope appeared at the end of the hall.  Like the sight of land after a voyage, progress to restore the radio station has begun.  In fact, we may have our beloved station running again by the beginning of the second semester.

How you may ask?  The ‘final’ club members, senior Joseph Bunch, junior Aidan Petrin, and senior Lawrence Mark Cabbab (hey thats me!)  brought the club’s revival to the attention of Mrs. Macomber and all of a sudden parts started moving again.  And at 6:46 PM on chilly November 19, a tweet arrived on the Coventry High School account.  Reading one single sentence, “Radio Station back up and running 24/7! 91.5 WCVY Coventry High School.”

While the station is not student run yet, songs are currently being looped until students can run the schedule again.  We are back on the airways after a small hiatus.

I sat down with Joe Bunch to ask him a few questions about the work it took to bring the club back.

“I wanted to bring the club back because there was just so much history behind it and I didn’t want to see it go to waste.”

And he also commented, “I love the ability to express my love for music.”

Since we are few seniors leading the club’s revival, I asked Joe how he felt about that to which he said that “We have a chance to lead the club because we do have more experience than those coming in.”

Ultimately, Joe said “I hope that the club can become popular again and people will find the same love we have to enjoy radio right now.”

To get a greater understanding of previous radio hosts I asked former club member, Alex Lupo (CHS ‘21 graduate and URI class of 25′) his thoughts on the club’s awaited return.  He said “I feel that it’s great that clubs are coming back, I think clubs offer a great chance for students to meet different students and participate in activities outside of school.”

Our school radio station has lasted much longer than we have been alive and together we believe that it can last much longer than when we leave.  The station is a well respected part of Coventry High School and to be a part of it’s legacy is an honor.  To be a part of it’s revival is another honor entirely and we hope that the world is ready to hear WCVY again.
