The Hunt Was ON!

On Saturday, October 29 from 5:00 to 9:30 pm, Coventry High School hosted The Hunt for the juniors and seniors as a way to celebrate Halloween. The big winners this year were team “Musketeers.” Best costume props went to the “Laundry” team.
The event operated as follows: as many as 50 teams participated, 4 students per team, and each team chose a particular theme and each student dressed up as a person or thing that related to the theme. It may have been characters from a book or movie, or even certain objects that go together. Each team then competed against the others in a scavenger hunt on and around campus filled with various puzzles and objects to find. The team that performed everything correctly in the fastest time won a grand prize of free tickets to Prom. There were also be prizes available for second and third place, along with the best costumes, as well.
The entire schedule for the Hunt began at 5:00 to 5:45. During this time, students arrived and checked in. From 6:00 to 6:45, a parade of costumes was held, where all of the team members showed off their costumes. At 6:45, the campus was shut down, and the Hunt was on, running until 8:00. Finally, from 8:15 to 9:30, there was a pizza and ice cream party back inside the school, where the pri awarded.
Interestingly enough, this popular school event was not thought up by Student Council or any school committee member. According to Mrs. Laroque, a long-time teacher at CHS, a group of seniors at first informally ran the event by themselves many years back. Similar to how it works now, students paid a fee to enter the competition, and the winning team would be rewarded. After a few years, however, students began to engage in criminal activity, doing whatever it took to win. In response, CHS decided to make it an official school event, which supposedly fixed the issue. Students still look forward to this event during the very beginning of the year, so it may be safe to say that CHS made a good decision for the students without ruining their fun.
Halloween itself may fall on a Monday this year, but that will not be stopping CHS from celebrating in their own way.
