Have you ever wondered what racism has done to our community. What about the impact it has on the black community and the people it hurts? All of these questions are fully explored in Angie Thomas’s debut young adult novel The Hate U Give.
Have you ever wondered what racism has done to our community. What about the impact it has on the black community and the people it hurts? All of these questions are fully explored in Angie Thomas’s debut young adult novel The Hate U Give.
The book was released by HarperCollins Publishers on February 28, 2017 and has a total of 464 pages. The story revolves around a girl named Starr who witnessed the murder of her childhood friend Khalil when he was shot by a cop for no apparent reason. Starr must testify at a court hearing about the murder while coming to realize that every decision she makes will affect her life.
The book is well-written and is brought to life with amazing characters. The book’s themes deal with the topic of racism in today’s society and depicts what can happen to not just one person, but to a whole community when they try to stand up and have a voice against the powerful who refuse to listen to the cries of the residents. The character that I enjoyed and admired throughout the story was Starr. She delivers the drama and suspense of the story. She describes the experiences she faces related to the shooting, as well as issues with her family and friends.
I would give this story 5 stars and would strongly recommend it to any readers out there because Starr’s story is one that deserves to be heard. I loved the way that the story delivers its message to readers to help make a change in our lives today and to help bring an end to racism.
