Taylor Swift’s newest album, Midnights, was released on Friday, October 21st. I’ll admit, I didn’t have the highest expectations for it. I mean, how can you beat the All Too Well 10-minute version? You can’t. Don’t get me wrong, I was excited, but I didn’t think that it was going to be as good as Red, Lover, or Folklore.

Midnights Review
Keely Sullivan
Taylor Swift’s newest album, Midnights, was released on Friday, October 21st. I’ll admit, I didn’t have the highest expectations for it. I mean, how can you beat the All Too Well 10-minute version? You can’t. Don’t get me wrong, I was excited, but I didn’t think that it was going to be as good as Red, Lover, or Folklore.
I didn’t stay up until midnight for the release on Thursday night, so I listened to Midnights for the first time on Friday morning, and honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. Midnights feels like a mix of 1989, Reputation, and Folklore. There is a large variety in the type of songs and the feelings that they all give.
As I said, each song is different, so let’s do a breakdown of each one.
Lavender Haze-
I don’t know how to feel about the very beginning of this song. I’m not the biggest fan. But I do really like the rest of it. It has a very good tune and great lyrics. It also gives me Lover vibes. I feel like it could be on the album. It also reminds me of the song I think He knows. Overall it’s a really good song and I feel like it will become one of the songs I play when I need energy.
Maroon-
This is another really good song! I really love the story that it tells. Taylor does a really good job showing us the feelings and the complexity of the relationship. I love how she connects one color to so many different aspects of the relationship. I also love the bridge! I feel like it really sums up all the hurt and confusion that she has been trying to show the entire song.
Anti-Hero-
There is such a good transition between Maroon and Anti-Hero. I’m not sure if that’s just me but I feel like these two go really well next to each other. I really like Anti-Hero. I feel like it really describes how I feel in my worst moments while also hyping me up. I love the vibe that this song has. It says everybody hates me and this sucks, but I’m just going to do whatever I want. I love it so much!
Snow On The Beach-
This is such a good song! Not going to lie, I had never really thought about what snow on the beach would be like. I guess I didn’t even think it was a thing that happened. Now that I think about it, it definitely would be weird, but also really beautiful, as the song says. I love this simile between the snow on the beach and the relationship, how sometimes the weirdest things, the ones we thought were impossible, are actually the most beautiful. This song is so beautiful, I could definitely see it on Folklore or Evermore. I also love Lana del Rey in this. It just gives the song something that it wouldn’t have if it was just Taylor.
You’re On Your Own, Kid-
I really love this song. It tells such a good story and really captures the emotions that go along with it. It starts with an exciting feeling and hopefulness. Then you start to see the hope get lost and the loneliness sinks in. Then that loneliness turns into something close to anger as she’s trying to get over the relationship. The emotions are so raw and beautiful. It also goes perfectly after Snow On The Beach. This is probably one of my favorite songs, and that’s really saying something.
Midnight Rain-
I don’t really love the beginning of the song. It could just be me but I don’t like the voice changer. The song definitely gets better but the voice changer comes back in the chorus, and I somehow can’t really get over it. I do like the other parts of the song, but it doesn’t make me want to sing or get up and start dancing like the other songs do. It’s also pretty short and doesn’t really have a bridge, which is typically my favorite part of a song. I still enjoy it, but it’s definitely not my favorite.
Question…?-
Question is a really good song. Again I didn’t love the voice changer at the very beginning but I could get over it. I do really love the rest of the song though. It has a really good tune and I love the lyrics. My only other problem is that it feels like there are two bridges. I do really enjoy them but I feel like the one after the first chorus doesn’t really fit there. Overall I really liked this.
Vigilante Sh*t-
I love this song! It starts off so well with the first lyric and stays good from there. This has such independent woman vibes and I love it so much! I definitely feel like this could be on Reputation. The only part I don’t love is the “Ladies always rise above, ladies know what people want, someone sweet and kind and fun, the lady simply had enough.” I don’t really know what it is, if it doesn’t go with the rest of the song, or if it just doesn’t go well where it’s placed, but something about it feels off for me. Still, I really like this song.
Bejeweled-
I really like this song. It has such a good vibe. I immediately want to start singing. It definitely feels like Reputation mixed with Lover and a little bit of 1989. It really makes me feel like I’m powerful and no matter what happens I’ll still be able to be me. I love this song because under all the fast beat music is a much deeper message. None of the bad things that have happened to you define you. None of the bad people who have been in your life get to control you. Bejeweled takes this important message and mixes it in with fun music, and an amazing music video, to make it that much more powerful.
Labyrinth-
Going from Bejeweled to Labyrinth is a little weird, but I was able to get past that. Labyrinth has a very good tune and summarizes heartbreak very well. Again, I don’t love the voice changer, but I feel like it goes with this song, it doesn’t ruin it for me. I feel like all the emotions are captured perfectly, the sadness, the confusion, and the hurt. I also love how it talks about expectations that other people have and how that can feel.
Karma-
Again, I don’t love going from Labyrinth to Karma, but I get so lost in the song, immediately, that I don’t really notice it. This song has such good vibes, the tune is so good, the lyrics are great, and the bridge is amazing! I love all the similes that it has and how it really allows us to get the happiness coming from this song. The upbeat tune truly gives me joy. I also really love the idea of karma and how it affects all of us in our lives.
Sweet Nothing-
I love this song! It has such a soft sweet feel to it. The lyrics are absolutely amazing. I love the story of the song and the idea that no matter what is happening in your life you’ll always have that one person to be there and be your rock. Again, I absolutely love the bridge. Sweet Nothing in Midnights is exactly what it’s describing. A break from all the hurt and chaos. True pure love. I’m so obsessed with this song!
Mastermind-
I also really like this song. It goes perfectly after Sweet Nothing. Similar enough, but not too close. I love the idea of this song. How she planned for a romance to happen, and has been doing it in the past. And then this one relationship was so perfect that she told what she did, even though it was hard for her. In the end, it all works out and I love it. The bridge is amazing! I love it!
So I decided to rank the songs. This was so hard for me! All of them are so good! Even the songs that are at the bottom are still very good, and I still love them. But, here it is-
Ranking-
- Sweet Nothing
- Lavender Haze
- Mastermind
- You’re On Your Own
- Vigilante Sh*t
