Stitch It Up is a great club to join as you'll be involved with a terrific group of students where there is the time to socialize with other students while learning a new skill, knitting, crocheting or looming. The club also has flexibility is it allows to still use academic lab time, but you can still participate in the club as you can go home and create your projects. This year, there are some parents working on donations for the club, but they need student participation and support, they need you! Join the Stitch It Up Club to support your fellow classmates in school! Further information, you can contact Ms. Plante or the co-advisor Mrs. DeLuca or stop by room 508 during advisory /academic lab.
STITCH IT UP Club: A Great Way to Help Others
BY GRACE PETRARCA
Are you looking for a new winter hat or a new winter scarf? Luckily for you, at CHS you can purchase handmade hats and scarves made by students just like yourselves. The items run very reasonably, under the price of 20 dollars. So, if you are looking for a new winter hat or scarf, you can find them in room 508, and they can be purchased during advisory or academic lab.
The club that creates these wonderful accessories is the Stitch It Up Club, run by Ms. Plante and co-run by Mrs. DeLuca. This club was started as part of the school culture and climate committee, a group of staff that helps make the school community a safer and more connected place. The idea was presented by Ms. Plante and the Stitch It Up Club was started only three years ago. All the proceeds all the sales go towards the school and strictly to the benefit of the students at CHS. During the last three years, the Stitch It Up Club has raised over $2,000 to help students at our school, a substantial amount of money just from selling the hats and scarves.
This year, they are over 60 students involved in this club, which counts as community service hours for National Honor Society, or any other clubs/activities that students need hours for. This is a helpful tip for those looking for community service hours. The club does not meet after school but meets during academic lab. However, not all students have to go to the academic meetings, they can knit, crochet, or loom at home and bring them in to donate.
The club runs all year round to make their product, so you could join at any time! This year, there’s a raffle for a Granny Square Afghan and tickets can be purchased by students and staff and room 508. This blanket is beautifully stitched with ornate patterns and colors, but can still keep you warm. I would recommend purchasing a raffle ticket, as it would be such a thoughtful gift for someone in your family this holiday season.
The club might seem intimidating for some like me as I do not have any experience with knitting, crocheting, or looming, but no prior experience is needed as the teachers will be able to help you out along the way and you can still be a part of the Stitch It Up Club. Students do not need to be apprehensive about joining, and, the more people they have, the more items they have to sell and money to bring back for the benefit of the students.
