“Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks and when she saw what she had done she gave her father forty-one!” On November 13th through 15th, the Drama Club at Coventry High did a fantastic job presenting the play, “Lizzie Borden of Fall River”.
The story of Lizzie Borden is based on a true story. In 1892, she allegedly took an axe and killed both her father and stepmother. This leads to the list of motives different people came up with. Many people believed that Lizzie wanted to benefit from her father’s estate, which is why she killed both parents. If she had only murdered her father, she would have had to split the money with her sister and stepmother.
Coventry presented this story in such a way that people in the audience were able to see Lizzie’s point of view and how she felt before, after, and during her trial. Overall, it was a very suspenseful play filled with a lot of emotion and dedication on the part of the actors.
The play consisted of a fourteen person cast, including Lizzie and all the people surrounding her life. However, those are not the only people deserving recognition for making the play possible! In addition to the onstage cast, there were also many people participating backstage in order to make the performance possible. From lights, sound, props to acting and costumes, we thank you all for a great performance!
At the end of the performance, the audience was left with a shocking revelation … the killer was Lizzy! While some agree with this discovery, many do not. Others state that it seemed it was her sister, Emma, or their maid, Bridget. The question I leave with you is not just who did it, but rather, what would their motive have been?
