This is part two of the book reviews for the Thrills, Chills and Alien Abductions list, a list of books put out last year that can be found in the school library. In my last review, I talked about the book Wilder Girls by Rory Power. This time, I'll be talking about Hell Follows With Us by Andrew Joseph White. Once I saw the cover of this book on the list, I didn't even need to read its description and already knew I wanted to do a review on it.
This is part two of the book reviews for the Thrills, Chills and Alien Abductions list, a list of books put out last year that can be found in the school library. Hell Follows With Us is about the main character Benji, who was part of a cult whose sole purpose was to exterminate all the “non-believers” on Earth. They had many extreme religious views on things, and killed billions of people for their “cause”. Benji was one of the many they experimented on to become Seraph, essentially a monster who would help the cult with their cause. This is why the book starts out with Benji running from them. This all takes place years in the future, where a disease called the Flood wiped out almost all people on Earth in a matter of a few years. The disease was what the cult used to kill billions of people so fast. Once Benji escapes, with the help of some kids from an LGBTQ+ center nearby, he decides to join their cause and help them fight the cult. He doesn’t have much time left, as the disease put into him when he was experimented on starts to tear him apart from the inside and changes him.
After reading this book I was pretty happy with it. Although in the beginning, you’re just kind of just thrown into it, and only get pieces of the story as you read. In my opinion, this made the story better because you’re able to put the pieces together yourself rather than having them already put together for you. Also, the characters in the book are very diverse, and the author did a good job describing and giving you a clear picture of each of them through the writing. Close to the end of the book was when most of the action happened, and the ending is kind of bittersweet, but feels right. Overall, Hell Follows With Us is a great book, and I’m glad to have done this review on it!
