For many people, myself included, music helps them throughout their day whether it be through schoolwork, a bike ride, a drive, and so much more. But since the same songs are played so often on the radio, you listen to the same songs you like so much that you begin to hate them. That is why I tried to make a Spotify playlist that may help introduce you to some new songs, old songs, songs you’ve heard before, and some you may even add to your own playlists.
Music. Something important for everyone, even more now being stuck at home. Now let me clarify something, these are my personal favorite songs, and one’s taste is very subjective. You may listen to every song and hate them, feel neutral, respect the choices, love the songs, I am not sure what you will feel. Here, I outline a few of my favorites right now with a link to a playlist of my favorite songs. (My tastes in music change frequently.) This is also not in a specific order. Each song listed below is from a different artist and is a different feeling/genre.
- “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” – Billy Joel
One of the less popular Billy Joel songs, “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” is a personal favorite of mine. One of the longer songs on The Stranger album released by Billy Joel, the song starts slowly before speeding up with some nice saxophone playing in the background. A lot of songs from The Stranger album are actually in my playlist.
- “Blinding Lights” – The Weeknd
A more recent release by The Weeknd, the song imitates many 80s songs with the reliance on synths. The song creates an energetic atmosphere, which for me, helps me to continue on a school assignment or a workout for longer than I normally would.
- “Can I Call You Tonight?” – Dayglow
Just like in “Blinding Lights”, background synths give the song a new feeling. However, Dayglow uses tape delay and other forms of distortion to achieve a song that reminds many listeners of their dreams. The artist is held in high regard in the Indie genre of music today.
- “Something Comforting” – Porter Robinson
Let’s step away from synths and such. “Something Comforting” is a more electronic song with a high production. The song relies on its beat more than lyrics for the most part and builds on its own character of beat drops and suspense building before reaching a climax and calming down to a piano and voice at the end.
- “Fire and Rain” – James Taylor
Unlike the other songs that I chose above, aside from the end of “Something Comforting”, no songs are just one man and a few instruments. James Taylor’s song, Fire and Rain, is James, his guitar, and some accompanying instruments. I chose “Fire and Rain” over other songs in the playlist, like John Denver or Simon and Garfunkel, because of personal preference.
All these songs and more are on the Quarantunes playlist I created on Spotify. Give it a listen, maybe you’ll like some.
