Even during this time of distance learning, many CHS students are trying to stay positive and are working hard as the school year begins to come to a close. One such group is Coventry High School's Navy Junior ROTC run by Master Cheif Kay. Coventry has a stellar ROTC program achieving accolades for their Marksmanship and Drill Team programs. Congratulations to the 2019-2020 Triad of CO: Senior, Mackenzie Bonang, XO: Senior, Katherine Salemi, and Chief: Junior, Logan Studley for maintaining their success when transitioning to distance learning. This year's Triad, staff, and members of ROTC have all had to adapt to the environment of distance learning and applaud all their efforts to keep the Oaker and Navy spirit embodied each and every day.

Even during this time of distance learning, many CHS students are trying to stay positive and are working hard as the school year begins to come to a close. One such group is Coventry High School’s Navy Junior ROTC run by Master Cheif Kay. This year’s Triad, staff, and members of ROTC have all had to adapt to the environment of distance learning and applaud all their efforts to keep the Oaker and Navy spirit embodied each and every day.
For those Oakers unfamiliar with ROTC, the Reserve Officers Training Corps, more commonly referred to as the ROTC, is a program which introduces students to the career path of the military, learning the inner workings and responsibilities if they are choosing or considering to serve in the armed forces after high school. The ROTC can be seen performing Color Guard duties at various assemblies and ceremonies, such as High School pep rallies and Unified sports games. Or simply, the over 40 members of ROTC can be seen as some of the many leaders at Coventry High School, some of which might be in your own classes.
One of the many key aspects of ROTC is building leadership skills with all the students in the program. The ROTC even offers leadership positions within the program to help students enhance their leadership skills. To name a few positions, the staff includes an educational officer, event coordinator, supply officer, athletics officer, and many other pistons that give students the opportunity to lead and execute responsibilities throughout the unit. The highest position in ROTC is called the Triad. The Triad oversees the other staff poisons, ensuring the unit properly functions while upholding their Navy core values of honor, courage, and commitment. The students must apply for all staff positions, the Triad positions being the highest-ranking as they oversee all of the numerous staff positions and members of the unit. Many students apply for the position of the Triad which consists of CO, XO, Chief.
CO: Titled the Commanding Officer, is the highest-ranked official in the Triad and oversee all function of the ROTC, releases important information and gather information from all departments to ensure the cohesiveness of the unit
XO: This triad position, known as the Executive Officer, assumes the position and responsibilities in the CO’s absence. The XO’s position involves making executive decisions with the CO and helps resolve conflict in the unit, if any, to ensure efficiency.
Chief: The final position includes the Chief which oversees and helps resolve the more personal conflicts and issues amongst the unit. Collectively, the Triad makes executive decisions, with the consultation for the rest of the staff, to ensure the success of the unit and its members.
A prerequisite to applying for XO and Chief is the student must be in at least in the 10th grade when applying and to apply for Co the applicant must be in the 11th grade. This year many members of the unit applied for the Triad positions and this past April 28th the positions for the 2020-2021 Triad positions were released. Congratulations to the elected members of ROTC! Next year’s Triad consists of their new CO: Junior, Logan Studley, XO: Sophomore, Alexander Travison, and Chief: Sophomore, Matthew Lloyd.
