The play is directed by Coventry High School drama teacher Mr. Mychael Wilkinson and has an amazing cast of several talented actors and actresses. The story is set in the 1930s Indiana during the early days of The Great Depression.
The plot revolves around a young boy named Buddy Layman, a young boy who suffers from a fear of water after a tragic accident several years ago that led to the death of his mother and resulted in Buddy never cleaning himself. Eventually, a retired preacher named C.C. Showers comes to town in search of work and becomes a mentor and friend to the young boy. Meanwhile, the town’s residents believe that C.C. Showers may be the answer in trying to clean the boy once and for all.
Alongside Buddy Layman, the story includes many amazing characters such as Ferris Layman, Buddy’s father who works as a mechanic and is hesitant to do anything that triggers Buddy’s fear. Basil Benet is a farmer/doctor who is dedicated to his work despite his dislike for technology taking away many jobs. Jennie Mae Layman, Buddy’s sister, shows love and care towards her brother while showing affections towards the preacher. The strong performances in this play will bring out some of the plays most dramatic and suspenseful moments and the emotion of its characters and what they all want to accomplish.
The play has a really dedicated crew, including our stage manager who does the best job to make sure everyone is on track of where we are in the play. We have a really strong and dedicated director who has gone to great distances and drastic measures to make sure the play comes together and that we all work together. So mark your calendars, bring your family and friends, and come and see The Diviners.
