This column is about exploring new music and finding new expressions that you believe bring out the true you. Maybe you agree with some words. Maybe you get down with some beats. Either way, let's select something new that gets us on our feet.
Neffex (Rap & Trap currently based out of Los Angeles, California)
Neffex is a two piece group intertwining the sounds of rap, hip-hop, trap, bass and electronic rock. The two men are music producers from Los Angeles, California who prefer to only be known by their group name Neffex. Influenced by Foxes and the cultures of trap, rap, rock and bangers, this duo is pretty unique. For reference, “Trap” is a genre deriving from dance, hip-hop and EDM music. “Bangers” are a form of loud, fast paced music, stemming from EDM combined with hip-hop or RnB. Fans of the duo are referred to as the #FoxFam. The inspiration of foxes inspire the two because foxes are cunning, like the group’s sound. Also the Neffex logo is supposed to resemble the face of a fox.
The two man duo are independent artists creating their own notion of self esteem, positivity and motivation. Their get out of your seat beats and in your face lyrics are impromptu for working out, gaming or just partying. Music brought to you by Neffex is non copyrighted for content creators. Also you can purchase their music or support them through listening to their music on Spotify, Google Play, YouTube, SoundCloud and Apple Music. Every week a new video is released and uploaded to their YouTube channel, usually on Wednesdays. Along with their original works, Neffex also offers twists on songs we already know combining aspects of both covers and remixes. An exemplar of that is their version of Eminem’s “Till I Collapse”; The song keeps the instrumental intro with an electronic dance beat. Eminem’s lyrics however, are somewhat altered to show poetic originality and creativity. Their personal interests are held in the body of a guitar which is where their rock vibe came from. A slogan they preach is, “We just want to create, share and motivate people to get after their dreams. All our original music is available copyright free.” With a little over 135,000 subscribers on YouTube, awaiting their next and every step, Neffex is on the rise and like the sun, they are shining bright. Not signed to any labels, these awesome men have already created their own merchandise available through redbubble.com.

Elaborating on the one man show who stays un-named to the rest of the world, he does not only write, mix and master, he also voice records and overdubs. The sounds he creates in the heart of his music come from physical or natural sounds from the world around him. Think about this: Sickick produced a song about a fidget spinner beat that now has over one million views and thousands of downloads. But this mysterious man with a mystical voice also has his own versions of popular songs in which he will either mashup multiple songs by that artist or use different beats to restore the song as a remix. Either way he also adds in original lyrics in turn changing a verse and making the song(s) his own. For examples that give further clarification listen to (Sickick v. Jason Derulo) → Mashup and (Kent Jones – Don’t Mind {Sickick Version}) → Remix. Videos on YouTube will depict a man in a mask and a hoodie maybe to give edge or maybe to keep on playing the ghostly persona. Sickick is one man but SickickMusic is a growing music power outlet fueled by many. Timeflies (Dance-Pop originated from Boston, Massachusetts)
A group that resonates close to home is the fantastic two man band Timeflies. In 2010, Rob Resnick and Cal Shapiro broke away from their musical trio to form their diehard following. Their vast fan base started with the groups “Timeflies Tuesdays”. These were YouTube videos in which the two men combined hit songs, rapping and lyrical charades. As seen in their video for Die Young (Originally by Ke$ha). The two would pull a word, name or phrase out of a hat, not knowing what it was and then would have to use it to make an improv rhyme. Their weekly uploads have now grown into a phenomenon expanding with over 175 video views and just about 300 million spotify streams, {As of May 2017}. Dubbed “Musical Masterminds” by Vanity Fair, Timeflies has put out countless singles, 2 mixtapes, 2 E.P.’s and 3 full length Albums. On the verge of breaking out of the local scene, Timeflies now resides in Los Angeles but originated in Boston. Before meeting in 2007 the two lived in New York and New Jersey. They two met in college and started doing performances as a funk group by the name of The Ride. In late September 2011, Timeflies released their debut Album, The Scotch Tape. That very album then went to #8 on Itunes overall chart and #2 on the Itunes Pop chart. Starting in a dingy basement with studio supplies that would be good to use for a high school band, Rob Resnick went on to major in music and philosophy. Resnick also worked as a music director at Cedar Lake Camp, which endowed him with enough skill of music production. Cal grew up with a gift a gab that gave him a nice spoonful of poetic genius. Cal has been writing and freestyling since his teenage years and went to college, coming out with degrees in music and entrepreneurship. In 2013 these men had the idea to start their own label by the name of Forty8Fifty. Now this label is proudly partnered with Island Def Jam Music Group, who released their debut single. “I Choose U”.

Music is not on a spectrum, music is the spectrum. This spectrum contains many different paths and routes. There is freedom and there is flexibility. Artists are not confined to one certain genre, culture or tradition. As a form to express opinions freely, people can be on different sides of the music spectrum. Just because an average male screams in a band, labeled, “metal”, doesn’t mean the same male won’t choose to listen to rap. Music is not stereotypical. One person can listen to every genre or only one. Either way, music is a spectrum. Blast open new doors with the intensity of your speakers. Embrace new sounds flowing through those wires, from your pocket to your ears. This column is about exploring new music and finding new expressions that you believe bring out the true you. Maybe you agree with some words. Maybe you get down with some beats. Either way, let’s select something new that gets us on our feet.
