Life in Quarantine By Stephen Russo
Everyone has had a different experience of life in isolation. Some enjoy it and some are losing their minds during this time of quarantine. Just recently, the Governor lifted the stay at home order on May 8th, but things still aren’t quite back to normal just yet. I would like to share my experience during the quarantine.
On March 16th, 2020, Governor Gina Raimondo called for schools to close due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus that hit the state of Rhode Island. That day, the governor declared that the following week would be considered April Vacation, and schools would continue with distance learning until further notice. Little did we know that the Governor would eventually close schools, as well as businesses deemed non-essential. This was a harsh reality for students and teachers to comprehend. Because of the move to distance learning, many seniors were crushed since their last year of schooling would be canceled. There would be no prom or graduation, which is something that every high schooler looks forward to doing. Now we’re left in an uncertain time at home with our families and are unable to see teachers, friends, and other relatives. Everyone has had a different experience of life in isolation. Some enjoy it and some are losing their minds during this time of quarantine. Just recently, the Governor lifted the stay at home order on May 8th, but things still aren’t quite back to normal just yet. I would like to share my experience during the quarantine.
Since this whole pandemic started and we were all put into quarantine, I had a hard time adjusting to this new way of living. I’ve never seen anything like this before and it was and still is very confusing. But whenever I’m going through something uncertain or difficult I always turn to music, so that’s one thing I’ve been doing to keep my head on straight. I listen to rock and rap mostly since those are my favorite genres of music and I enjoy listening to Linkin Park, Eminem, and NF. I’ve also found some new bands during this time. Another way I’ve been keeping myself busy is I’ve been practicing new tricks and techniques with my yoyo. I’ve been using a yoyo since I was about 8 years old but I would take long breaks in between years because my yoyos would break or I’d get knots in my string and then just move on from there. But in the past year, I have been getting serious with yoyos and trying to learn different techniques and tricks as some may have noticed in the past year at school. I use my yoyo to plink around with and to express creativity with my tricks and styles of yoyo play. Now I know this may sound silly that a 16-year-old kid is using a yoyo still in 2020 when it’s been a dying trend since the 1990s. To those people I’m weird, but to me, I like having the yoyo as a creative outlet to express myself and to wow my friends and family with my abilities. When I see their faces after I execute a hard trick, it’s enough to keep me going and I could care less about the people who may think I’m foolish for using a yoyo.
Lastly, in order to keep in touch with my friends, I have been video chatting and texting with them on Snapchat and Discord and I’ve also been playing online games with my cousins and some of my other friends. Keeping in touch really hasn’t been that much of a struggle for me. It’s just unfortunate that I can’t see them or hang out with them at the mall or the movie theater. But given the current circumstances, I’ll take what I can get. That’s what I have been doing to keep myself from going insane and keeping my head clear and enjoying life as best I can, despite the fact that I just want things to go back to normal so I can go outside again and play some tennis. Now I hope everyone reading this has a lovely day or night and remember to be happy with what you have and to make the best of this uncertain and scary time and to stay safe.
