Joe Lachance’s Eagle Project Soles4Souls
By Ruby Nguyen
Joe Lachance, a senior at Coventry High School, decided to collect shoes for his eagle scout project. Joe, who has been a boy scout since the fifth grade and a cub scout since the second grade, decided to start his eagle scout project because he had seen the success that other scouts had had in completing their projects. He thought that many people would benefit from shoe donations, and he reflected on the fact that many people have extra shoes lying around the house. Joe used various methods of publicizing his operation by using social media, flyers, as well as announcements in his church and school.
After many hours of research and careful consideration, Joe decided to get involved with “Soles4souls”, a non-profit organization committed to fighting poverty by distributing clothing and shoes to countries that don’t have enough money to afford them. Joe asked various businesses if he could put drop off boxes on their property so people would have easy access to donating. He made sure that people were not inconvenienced to ensure that his project would have a good outcome. Throughout the week, Joe would pick up the shoes at the drop places and inventory them. Joe explained that almost all the work was done by him. He put in over 30 hours in planning and an additional 20 hours doing pick up and drop offs. He worked hard to make sure people were aware of his project by emailing his troop twice a week, communicating with Soles4souls to make sure they knew about his large donation, and posting flyers at various places around the Coventry area.
All of his hard work paid off because Joe exceeded his goal by almost five times. His original goal was 300 pairs of shoes, and his end result was 1447 pairs of shoes! In addition to collecting so many shoes, he also managed to raise over 700 dollars in donations. Joe hopes more people will be inspired by his project. He says he wants to see “more people doing good things.” Joe has made a difference in many people’s lives and he “surely hopes to continue working to better this world.” Joe is a true inspiration and the entire CHS community should commend him for his good work.
