How to Minimize Midterm Exam Stress BY AMANDA MCKECHNIE
As much as we students like to deny it, midterms are coming soon. For many students, this could be their least favorite and most stressful time of the year. Midterms can be a struggle for many students and can sometimes be pushed off until the day before midterms, causing more stress. So to make students’ midterm “season” less of a hassle here are some tips and further information about it.
Of course, there are common preparations you can make like listening to music and good time management but there are a lot more to try. Mrs. Siemmao, a CHS guidance counselor, recommended several ways to relieve stress including exercise, yoga, or something as simple as going outside for fresh air.
Another tip that can be very useful that Mrs. Siemmao said was after 45 mins of studying take a break for mental downtime. In the break, you can read, talk to friends or parents.
Another tip is to start preparing and reviewing now because the earlier we start the more stress it will relieve when the midterm date comes closer.
Also recommended by Mrs. Siemmao is AC-Lab will be a very useful tool for studying and asking teachers questions like what’s going to be on the midterm. Get as much help needed from your teachers.
Some studying techniques suggested by Mrs. Siemmao are re-writing out notes or key points, remaking tests and take it again to see how you do, study and then write down everything you remember and see if you missed anything, or even just studying with a friend.
CHS midterms will take place in January during the week of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Schedules will be sent to each student by Mrs. Macomber. With the schedules, you must make sure you come in on time because teachers will not let you in if you are late. To miss an exam a doctor’s note is needed. To miss exams for other reasons they will have to be brought up to Mrs. Macomber.
Before each exam, we will have time in the morning to review and also time in between exams. Students will have two exams per day. Each day with exams will be a half a day to go home and study more. Each exam will be timed for two hours and if you run out of time it depends on the teacher whether you can finish it. Midterms count for ten percent of grades for the semester and there are no retakes.
