Giving Thanks By Christiana Votta

People don't always fully realize what they have till it's gone. It sounds cliche but it is true. We take for granted what we have, the people around us that we love, and our education.

Every fourth Thursday in November, we wonder about a recurring question. Why is it important to give thanks? This query is a great conversation opener for many people and can open the window to some great conversations. So stick around to hear my thoughts and opinions regarding this topic!

Thanksgiving is a national holiday known for the theme of giving thanks, and on this holiday that’s exactly what we do. But why is giving thanks important? From personal experiences, pondering about what I am thankful for has helped me have a more positive outlook. For example, I am so lucky to have my cat, she’s always there for me when I am feeling down. As many do, I turn to my pet as a source of comfort and solace. If I did not have her I wouldn’t get this feeling of relief after being upset, or have this way to reconnect with the now. So imagining a scenario where I don’t have my cat, gives me a greater sense of appreciation as a whole. People don’t always fully realize what they have till it’s gone. It sounds cliche but it is true. We take for granted what we have, the people around us that we love, and our education.

But how can we show our thankfulness? When it comes to showing thanks or gratitude, just acknowledging what someone has done goes a long way. You don’t have to wait to show your thankfulness only on Thanksgiving. When you’re out sick and your friend takes notes for you in your stead, showing appreciation by saying thank you means a lot. Or you can always buy a little token of appreciation, but usually giving a genuine thank you can make a difference. I like making homemade cards to show my thanks. It’s more personal and it’s a way to further connect with someone.

Giving thanks is always important. It helps show someone your appreciation and can make someone feel good. It can also help you remember that you have things you care about that you are lucky to have, and how you would feel if you lost them. What are you thankful for and how do you show thanks? No matter how you show thanks it is valid and I am sure the person on the receiving end will most certainly appreciate it.
