Everything You Need to Know About CHS’ Recycling Program

There’s no doubt CHS does it’s best to reuse, reduce, and recycle. Every classroom now has a big blue bin inside or outside waiting to be picked up. However, have you ever wondered…where does all our recycling go, and who collects it? Through an interview with science teacher and head of the recycling club, Mr. Golas, these answers can finally satisfy what’s been surely keeping you up at night.
The recycling club itself, as well as the students behind the scenes, have been around on and off for around a decade. The club has been lead by teachers such as the retired Mr. Stetson and chemistry teacher Dr. Pothier.
The program follows the town recycling program and is allowed to recycle clean paper products, plastic bottles, and cans. All these are allowed in the bin and are later collected and separated by students in the recycling club. However, these aren’t the only materials thrown in the bin. From experience, many students become lazy and throw random trash in the bin, which has to be later picked out and thrown away. Other times, it can just be a matter of confusion where glass bottles or metal welding rods (ahem, welding class) are thrown in.
So, every Wednesday volunteers in the club go around the school after hours and pick apart recycling bins, which is brave in my opinion. Finally, the then readily recyclable items are thrown in the big green town recycling bins behind the school, and that’s pretty much it.
This recycling program is key to pushing a wasteful establishment such as a school in the right direction towards saving the planet. Bravo recycling club!
